Best Time to Visit Singapore: Weather, Monsoons and Events by Month

Singapore has no dry season, so the real choice is February-April or July-early September for the driest afternoons, or December for the festive lights, Formula 1 and the UAE's own winter break.

The short answer: there is no single best month for Singapore, since it sits almost on the equator and runs 30-33°C by day all year; what changes is the rain. December and January are wettest, February is driest and breeziest, and April-May and October-November bring short, heavy afternoon thunderstorms rather than all-day rain. For most UAE travellers, February to April or July to early September give the best odds of a dry afternoon, while December suits anyone coming for Christmas lights, Gardens by the Bay's festive show or the UAE's own winter school break, rain and all.

Figures are the 1991-2020 climate normals for Changi, published by the Meteorological Service Singapore. Singapore averages about 2,113mm of rain a year over 171 rain days, roughly double Dubai's entire annual rainfall spread across almost half the days of the year, so some rain on any given afternoon is normal rather than a sign you picked the wrong month.

Singapore's two monsoons and two in-between seasons

Singapore doesn't have a dry season the way Dubai does. Instead, four periods repeat every year, each with its own rain pattern, as described by the Meteorological Service Singapore.

North-east monsoon (December to early March): wet, then windy

This is the wettest stretch of the year. December and January bring the heaviest, most frequent rain, often as longer spells rather than short bursts. By February, rain eases off noticeably (it's the driest month on record), but the wind picks up and the sea off the East Coast gets choppier. Pack a light jacket for air-conditioned interiors rather than for the outdoor temperature, which barely moves.

South-west monsoon (June to September): short squalls, then haze risk

Rain in these months tends to arrive as brief, heavy downpours known locally as Sumatra squalls, rolling in from Sumatra in the early morning or late at night rather than as steady afternoon rain. Days are drier overall than the rest of the year. The trade-off is haze risk, covered below.

The two inter-monsoon periods (April-May and October-November): short, sharp storms

Between the two monsoons, the wind goes quiet and the afternoon heat builds until it breaks as a thunderstorm, usually from mid-afternoon to early evening. These storms are intense but brief, often over within 30 to 60 minutes, so they rarely wreck a whole day's plans if you build in an indoor option for mid-afternoon.

Haze: when it's a risk, and what to do about it

Haze is smoke drifting over from land and forest fires, mostly in Sumatra and Indonesian Borneo, carried by the prevailing winds during the south-west monsoon. It isn't guaranteed every year: it depends on how dry that year's fire season is in Indonesia, and dry, El Niño-influenced years raise the risk noticeably. When it does happen, it's most likely from roughly August to October, though some years see little or none at all.

If you're travelling in this window, check the news in the days before you fly rather than planning around it months ahead. Singapore reports its air quality readings in real time, and a bad haze week tends to be short-lived. If it happens while you're there, treat it like a smoggy day anywhere else: cut back on strenuous outdoor activity if you're sensitive to it.

Singapore's calendar: the events worth planning around

Chinese New Year and Chingay (late January to February)

Chinese New Year 2027 falls on Saturday 6 and Sunday 7 February, with Monday 8 February added as the public holiday lands on a weekend. Chinatown is lit and decorated for weeks beforehand, with a street bazaar and lion dances. The Chingay Parade, Singapore's biggest street parade, usually follows a few weeks later (27 and 28 February in 2026), but the exact 2027 date had not been announced when we checked.

Mid-year sales season (around June to July)

What used to be branded as the Great Singapore Sale is now run differently, as a mid-year retail promotion rather than one fixed, islandwide sale with a single start date. Expect discounts across the malls on Orchard Road and beyond through June and July, but treat any specific dates as approximate.

National Day (9 August)

Singapore's National Day is a fixed date, 9 August, marked with a parade and fireworks around the Padang or the Marina Bay floating platform. It's a busy weekend to be in the city, with road closures around the parade route and rehearsals in the weeks before.

Formula 1 Singapore Grand Prix (late September to October)

The Singapore Grand Prix, a night race through the streets around Marina Bay, is contracted to stay there through 2028, per Formula 1's own 2026 calendar, which had the 2026 race running 9 to 11 October. The 2027 date had not been announced when we checked; expect a similar late-September to mid-October slot. Hotel rates around Marina Bay spike hard for race weekend, so book well ahead if that's your reason for the trip.

Hari Raya and Deepavali

Hari Raya Puasa (Eid al-Fitr) 2027 in Singapore is expected on Wednesday 10 March, close to the UAE's own expected dates. Hari Raya Haji (Eid al-Adha) is expected in mid-May, again close to the UAE's own window. Deepavali 2027 is currently expected around late October, confirmed only closer to the time; Little India is strung with lights and a festive market for weeks around it either way.

Christmas on Orchard Road and Gardens by the Bay

Orchard Road's Christmas lights typically go up in November and stay on into early January. At Gardens by the Bay, the Supertree Grove's nightly Garden Rhapsody show adds extra late performances through the festive period, confirmed for 27 November to 11 December 2026, 23 to 27 December, and 31 December 2026 to 3 January 2027, per the Gardens by the Bay website. It's an easy add-on to an evening in the Marina Bay area whatever else brings you to Singapore that month.

Prices and crowds by season

December, Chinese New Year week and the Formula 1 weekend are Singapore's three busiest, priciest windows, since each stacks a public holiday or marquee event onto an already popular stop. February to April and July to early September, outside those headline events, are comparatively calmer and cheaper for the same hotels, with the trade-off of slightly more rain risk in April and May.

When UAE school holidays line up with Singapore

UAE break2026/27 datesSingapore at that time
School winter break14 December 2026 to 3 January 2027Wettest weeks of the year, but also Christmas lights, Gardens by the Bay's festive show and New Year
Spring break (end of Term 2)Around 5 to 11 April 2027 for most Dubai and Ministry of Education schoolsInter-monsoon; hot, with short afternoon thunderstorms and no major event to clash with
Summer school holidaysRoughly July to AugustSouth-west monsoon, drier days, haze risk building through the window, National Day on 9 August

Dubai and most Ministry of Education schools' spring break for 2026-27 falls around 5 to 11 April 2027, per our own UAE winter break guide; check your own school's calendar, since some, such as Sharjah's SPEA schools, run a slightly different window.

Getting to Singapore from the UAE

Emirates and Singapore Airlines both fly non-stop from Dubai to Singapore Changi, in about seven to seven and a half hours. Etihad flies non-stop from Abu Dhabi to Singapore too, on a similar flight time. All three work well for an evening departure from the UAE and a late-morning or early-afternoon arrival, depending on the day.

Visa and arrival paperwork

Whether you need a visa depends on your passport, not your UAE residence: Emiratis, Filipinos and most Western passport holders travel visa-free, while Indian, Pakistani, Egyptian and Bangladeshi passport holders need one, applied for through an authorised agent in the UAE. Everyone fills in the free SG Arrival Card online within three days of arrival. For the full breakdown by passport and fees, see our Singapore visa for UAE residents guide, or use our Singapore visa service.

Before you go

  • Carry a light rain jacket or a small umbrella year-round, not just in the wetter months; a 20-minute downpour can happen in any season.
  • Book Gardens by the Bay's indoor conservatories ahead if you want a guaranteed cool, dry couple of hours in the middle of a hot day.
  • Dress for air-conditioning, not the outdoor heat: malls, the MRT and most restaurants run cold, so a light layer is worth packing even in the hottest months.
  • Carry a small personal amount of chewing gum only if you must: importing it commercially is restricted and selling it is banned, so don't bring a large supply through customs.
  • Check Marina Bay and Orchard Road hotel rates before fixing dates if you're flexible: the swing between a quiet week and race weekend or Chinese New Year can be significant.
