The short answer: Abu Dhabi's sights fall into five groups: the Sheikh Zayed Grand Mosque on the Dubai approach, the downtown palace and heritage sites (Qasr Al Watan, Qasr Al Hosn, Heritage Village, the Corniche), the Saadiyat Island museums (Louvre Abu Dhabi, the Zayed National Museum, the Natural History Museum, teamLab Phenomena), the Yas Island theme parks, and free desert stops east of the city (Al Wathba Salt Lake and the Fossil Dunes). Abu Dhabi is about 140 km from Dubai, a 1 to 1.5-hour drive on the E11. Two or three stops fit a day trip; the museums and a theme park together need a weekend.
This guide is for UAE residents planning a day trip or weekend in Abu Dhabi: what to see, what it costs where we could confirm it, how to get there without a car, and which sights are free. For all seven emirates, see our places to visit in the UAE guide, and for Abu Dhabi's inland oasis city, with its own forts and the Jebel Hafeet road, see places to visit in Al Ain.

Sheikh Zayed Grand Mosque
The UAE's largest mosque, with 82 domes, more than 1,000 columns and one of the world's largest hand-knotted carpets, just off the E11 on the Dubai side of the city.
It was free to visit for years. Since September 2026, The National and Gulf News report, visitors pay an entry fee: AED 10 for tourists, AED 5 for Emirates ID holders and AED 8 for those arriving with a tour operator. Worshippers, visitors aged 60 and over, children under three and people of determination still enter free, and the guided cultural tours stay free. Visiting hours are 9am to 8.30pm daily, with Fridays split into 9 to 11.30am and 2.30 to 8.30pm around Friday prayers. Book your visit on the mosque's website before you go; hours change in Ramadan.
Dress modestly: full-length trousers and a sleeved top for men; hair, arms and legs covered for women; shoes off before the prayer hall. Our Full Day Abu Dhabi City Tour With Grand Mosque, from AED 151.59, collects you in Dubai and covers the mosque and the main city sights in one day. The Abu Dhabi Cultural Heritage Tour from Dubai, from AED 261, builds a fuller heritage day around it.
Qasr Al Watan
A working presidential palace, open to visitors since 2019: these are the halls where the UAE receives heads of state. The Great Hall sits beneath a 37-metre dome in white marble, mother of pearl and gold leaf, and the House of Knowledge holds manuscripts on Arab science. Cover shoulders and knees.
The palace's own booking page lists adult tickets from AED 65 and junior tickets from AED 30, with the palace open 10am to 5pm in October 2026 and a short light show, Palace in Motion, on the facade at 6.30pm. Pair it with the Louvre: our Qasr Al Watan with Louvre Museum Combo Tickets are from AED 95 for both, less than the two adult gate tickets bought separately.
Qasr Al Hosn and Heritage Village
Qasr Al Hosn
Abu Dhabi's oldest standing building: a watchtower raised in the 1760s from coral stone to guard the island's freshwater well. A fort grew around it and served as the ruling family's home and seat of government until 1966; it reopened as a museum in 2018 after a long restoration. The House of Artisans and the grounds are free, and the fort itself takes a ticket: our Qasr al Hosn Entrance Ticket is from AED 72.19. The site can close for state events, so check the day before.
Heritage Village
A small, free recreation of pre-oil Emirati life on the Corniche breakwater near Marina Mall: palm-frond houses, a souq area and craft demonstrations on quieter days, with a view back across the water to the city skyline. It suits an hour, ideally late afternoon.
The Saadiyat Cultural District
Saadiyat Island, north-east of the city centre, has four museums open as of October 2026, with a fifth, the Guggenheim, due in December. A Museums Pass, sold since 1 March 2026, bundles the Louvre with the Zayed National Museum or the Natural History Museum, which helps if you plan two in one day.
Louvre Abu Dhabi
The first universal museum in the Arab world, set in the sea under Jean Nouvel's 180-metre dome, perforated so sunlight falls through it in patterns. Works from different civilisations sit side by side, including loans from museums in France. The museum's ticket page lists adults at AED 70, with under-18s free. The galleries open 10am to 6.30pm Monday to Thursday and 10am to 8.30pm Friday to Sunday, and the dome walk stays open later. Allow two hours.
Zayed National Museum
The UAE's national museum opened on 3 December 2025, timed to National Day. Its five towers, shaped like falcon feathers, act as chimneys that pull hot air out of the galleries, which tell the story of the land and of the late Sheikh Zayed bin Sultan Al Nahyan. It opens daily 10am to 8pm. Our Zayed National Museum Abu Dhabi Entrance Ticket is from AED 76.04.
Natural History Museum Abu Dhabi
Opened in November 2025, with dinosaur skeletons, meteorites and a planetarium, a strong choice for children. The adult ticket was AED 70 at launch, under-18s free; it is part of the Museums Pass.
teamLab Phenomena
A 17,000 square-metre building of digital art you walk, sit and lie inside, open since April 2025. Its booking page lists the regular ticket at AED 165, AED 155 for UAE residents, and AED 55 for children aged 4 to 12, with under-4s free. It opens 10am to 10pm; allow about two and a half hours.
Guggenheim Abu Dhabi
Frank Gehry's museum of sculptural cones, announced in 2006 and delayed many times. The Department of Culture and Tourism Abu Dhabi has announced an opening date of 11 December 2026. Until then there is nothing to book.
The Corniche and its beaches
The Corniche is Abu Dhabi's main waterfront: about 8 km of promenade, free to walk or cycle, at its best in the early evening. Its beach has a free public section and fenced family sections, reported at about AED 10, with showers and loungers for hire. It is the easiest free half-hour in the city between two paid sights.
Yas Island
Yas Island, about 45 minutes from Dubai, is Abu Dhabi's theme-park and motorsport district, also home to Yas Marina Circuit, which hosts the Formula 1 Abu Dhabi Grand Prix, and Yas Mall. The parks' own websites list single-day tickets bought online from AED 345 for Ferrari World, AED 345 for Warner Bros World, AED 295 for Yas Waterworld and AED 375 for SeaWorld. Multi-park passes, valid across several days, save more if you plan two or three parks.
Ferrari World
A Ferrari-themed park under a vast red roof, with more than 40 rides, including Formula Rossa, among the fastest roller coasters in the world, and Flying Aces with one of the steepest lift hills anywhere. Go on a weekday for shorter queues.
Warner Bros World Abu Dhabi
One of the largest indoor theme parks in the world, with six lands built around DC Super Heroes and the Looney Tunes and Hanna-Barbera cartoons, from Gotham City to Bedrock. Being indoors, it works in any month.
Yas Waterworld
A water park themed on the UAE's pearl-diving past, with more than 40 rides and slides. Our Yas Water World Abu Dhabi Ticket is from AED 225, below the park's own online price.
SeaWorld Yas Island
SeaWorld's first park outside the United States, opened in 2023: a single indoor building of aquariums, marine-life zones and rides such as the Manta coaster. Our Sea World Theme Park Ticket is from AED 355.
Snow Abu Dhabi
An indoor snow park in Reem Mall on Al Reem Island: real snow and sub-zero air in a winter village, with 20 rides and attractions from a carousel to toboggan runs. It suits families on a hot afternoon. Our Snow Abu Dhabi Entrance Ticket is from AED 165.
Jubail Mangrove Park
A boardwalk through the mangroves on Jubail Island, between the city and Saadiyat, open daily 8am to 6.30pm. Walking the boardwalk is the cheap option; the park's booking page lists guided kayaking at AED 110 a person for an hour and sunrise or sunset kayaking at AED 120 for 90 minutes. Go at high tide, when the channels are full and herons and crabs are out.
Al Wathba Salt Lake and the Fossil Dunes
Al Wathba Salt Lake
A shallow lake east of the city, ringed by white salt crust that turns the water pink in some light. It is free and best for photographs at sunrise or sunset; treat it as a place to photograph rather than to swim. It is about 40 to 45 minutes' drive from central Abu Dhabi off the road to Al Ain, and an SUV helps on the last stretch.
Al Wathba Fossil Dunes
Wind-carved rock formations, more than 1,700 of them across about 7 square kilometres: old dunes hardened by minerals and groundwater, then shaped as the loose sand around them blew away. The site is near the salt lake but not the same place, and entry is free. Late afternoon light shows the ridges best.
Longer trips: Liwa and Sir Bani Yas Island
Liwa Oasis
Oasis villages on the edge of the Rub' al Khali, the Empty Quarter, with some of the tallest dunes in the region, including Moreeb Dune. It is roughly 3 to 4 hours' drive from Abu Dhabi city, so it suits an overnight stay, especially during the Liwa festival season in winter, rather than a first visit to Abu Dhabi.
Sir Bani Yas Island
An island wildlife reserve off the western coast, with giraffes, cheetahs and Arabian oryx seen on 4x4 drives, and the remains of a 7th-century Christian monastery. Visits are usually arranged with an overnight stay at the island's resorts, reached by boat from the Jebel Dhanna jetty, so plan it as a weekend of its own.
Getting to Abu Dhabi from Dubai
By road it is about 140 km on the E11, roughly 1 to 1.5 hours off peak and longer in rush hour; Yas Island and the Grand Mosque come first, the Corniche last. The RTA's E100 bus runs from Al Ghubaiba to Abu Dhabi Central Bus Station for a reported AED 25 on a Nol card; check journey times in the RTA app, as traffic decides them. In the city, taxis and ride-hailing cover the centre, Saadiyat and Yas. For Al Wathba, the Fossil Dunes or anywhere further out, you need a car.
A one-day or two-day plan from Dubai
- One day: Leave early for the Grand Mosque, quieter in the morning. Continue to Qasr Al Watan, have lunch, then spend the afternoon at the Louvre on Saadiyat and finish with a Corniche walk at sunset before the drive back.
- Day 2 (if you stay over): Either a Saadiyat day, picking two of the museums with a Museums Pass, or a Yas Island day at one or two parks. Families on a hot day can swap in Snow Abu Dhabi.
- With a car and a free morning: Sunrise at Al Wathba Salt Lake and the Fossil Dunes, then back into the city before the heat.
Best time to visit Abu Dhabi
November to April suits the Grand Mosque courtyards, the Corniche and Saadiyat's outdoor spaces, with January and February the coolest months. From June to September daytime highs are often above 40°C, so keep outdoor sights for early morning or evening and let the museums, Qasr Al Watan, the indoor parks and Snow Abu Dhabi carry the middle of the day.
