The short answer: A South African passport does not get visa-free entry or an automatic visa on arrival in the UAE. Most South Africans still need a visit visa arranged before they fly, through a UAE resident relative (via ICP or GDRFA Dubai), or through a licensed travel agency, airline or hotel, which is the visa Holidayys arranges. Since 25 June 2026, South Africans who also hold a current residence permit from the US, the UK, an EU member state or one of six other countries can apply for a 14-day or 60-day entry visa under a new ICP scheme the Ministry of Foreign Affairs calls a visa on arrival. A plain South African passport, on its own, does not qualify.

Many South Africans live in Dubai and Abu Dhabi, and visits run both ways: a South African in the UAE bringing parents or children over, or a family flying out from Johannesburg or Cape Town to see them. Getting the visa right matters, because the belief that South Africans can simply land and be given a visa on arrival is common and, as things stand, wrong. An airline that lets you check in without the right visa or permit can still have you turned back at passport control, and overstaying carries a daily fine. This guide sets out what the UAE's own checkers say today, the new route for permit holders, and the ordinary routes everyone else still uses.

Does South Africa get a UAE visa on arrival? What the two checkers say

We put this to both of the UAE's own tools on 9 October 2026, because many South Africans believe a visa on arrival is already theirs. The Ministry of Foreign Affairs' checker, "Visa information to enter the country," lists the Republic of South Africa as "Visa Required," not "Visa Free." Visit Dubai, Dubai's official tourism site, runs its own checker: selecting South Africa and "Tourism" returns a plain answer, "You will need to arrange a visa before your trip to Dubai," and goes on to list the agency, airline, hotel and relative-sponsored routes below. The two official checkers agree: on a standard South African passport, there is no visa-free entry and no visa on arrival.

Some third-party travel sites describe South Africans as visa-exempt, which is not what either official checker says. The one real exception is the narrower residence-permit scheme below, which the Ministry headlines as a "visa on arrival". Treat the MOFA and Visit Dubai checkers, not a travel blog, as the final word for your own passport.

Three ways to get a UAE visa as a South African traveller

  • Have a relative in the UAE sponsor you. They apply through ICP outside Dubai or GDRFA Dubai within it, resting on their own residence visa, Emirates ID and income.
  • Book a visit visa through a licensed travel agency, airline or hotel. This is the visa Holidayys arranges, and it needs no UAE-based sponsor at all, which makes it the simpler route if you have no relative there.
  • Check whether you qualify for the new entry visa. Since 25 June 2026 the UAE has opened this route to South Africans, but only with a qualifying residence permit from certain other countries. See the dedicated section below.

Book a visit visa through a travel agency, airline or hotel

This is the most straightforward route if you have no UAE resident to sponsor you, since it does not depend on anyone's salary or residence status. GDRFA Dubai calls its version a "tourist visa," sponsored by one of "the establishments working in the field of tourism," as its own pages put it; only accredited tourism offices in the emirate can issue it. Read directly on GDRFA Dubai's own service pages:

  • Single entry: AED 200 for 30 days, or AED 300 for 60 days, plus 5% VAT
  • Multiple entry: AED 300 for 30 days, or AED 500 for 60 days, plus 5% VAT
  • Security deposit: none, on this type of visa
  • Processing time: 48 hours

GDRFA Dubai's terms also ask for a passport valid for at least six months, a ticket to continue your journey or return home, and UAE-valid health insurance. Applying while already inside the UAE adds a Knowledge Dirham and an Innovation Dirham of AED 10 each, plus an AED 500 in-country fee. Outside Dubai, ICP runs the same kind of service through agencies, airlines and hotels, with its own fee schedule. See UAE visa services for the 14, 30, 60 and 90-day options we arrange, including 30 days, 60 days and 90 days. We cannot guarantee or speed up a government decision.

If you have a parent, spouse, sibling or child already living in the UAE, they can sponsor your visit directly, through ICP outside Dubai or GDRFA Dubai within it. GDRFA Dubai's fee page for the multiple-entry version lists AED 300 for 30 days, AED 500 for 60 days or AED 700 for 90 days, plus 5% VAT, a refundable AED 2,000 financial guarantee and health insurance of AED 40 to AED 90 depending on the length of stay. This rests on the sponsor's own residence visa, Emirates ID and income, not yours, and sits alongside the agency-sponsored route above rather than replacing it. The new entry visa for South Africans with a residence permit (from 25 June 2026)

On 25 June 2026 the UAE's Ministry of Foreign Affairs widened a scheme previously open mainly to Indian passport holders, calling it the "UAE Entry Visa for Nationals of Certain Countries." It added nationals of Indonesia, Vietnam, Thailand, the Philippines, Kenya and South Africa. As the Ministry's own announcement states it:

  • Who: ordinary-passport holders from South Africa and accompanying family members, who also hold a valid residence permit issued by the United States, an EU member state, the United Kingdom, Singapore, Japan, South Korea, Australia, New Zealand or Canada.
  • 14-day visa: AED 100 in total issuance fees. It may be extended once while you are in the UAE.
  • 60-day visa: AED 250 in total issuance fees. It is for a single stay and cannot be extended.
  • Overstay: holders must leave before the stay ends; see our UAE overstay fines guide for the fine that follows.

Emirates' own eligibility page, which lists South Africa in this group alongside Indonesia, Kenya, the Philippines, Thailand and Vietnam, adds detail the Ministry's notice does not spell out. For a residence permit from Australia, Canada, Japan, New Zealand, South Korea or Singapore, it asks specifically for a residence permit, not a visit visa, and will not accept a student visa for Singapore; an employment pass must show its date of issue and expiry. For the United States, the United Kingdom or an EU member state, a valid visa counts as well as a residence permit. Carry the actual document with you, and confirm with your airline or ICP which one yours is before you fly.

The Ministry's announcement calls this a visa on arrival, while Emirates offers the same permit through Manage your booking before you fly. Confirm the channel with your airline or ICP, and have your documents ready before you travel.

What South Africa's own missions say

South Africa has two missions in the UAE, an embassy in Abu Dhabi and a consulate-general in Dubai, and neither handles UAE visas. The Dubai consulate's page covers South African passports, Smart ID applications and consular help, and routes South African visa applications (the ones issued by South Africa, not the UAE) through VFS Global, with no mention of UAE visit visas. The Abu Dhabi embassy's page covers the same civic and consular services, plus visas for UAE citizens visiting South Africa, not the other way round. For a UAE visa, go to ICP, GDRFA Dubai or your sponsor, not a South African mission. South Africa's own Department of International Relations and Cooperation (DIRCO) publishes only general advice for citizens travelling abroad: check entry requirements with the destination's own authorities, since "requirements can change from time to time," which is exactly what this guide and the official UAE checkers above are for.

Extending, changing or ending the visit

A pre-arranged visit visa, however sponsored, generally runs for its original 14, 30, 60 or 90 days before it needs extending or ending. Our UAE visit visa extension guide covers how extensions work and their fees, and our UAE visit visa validity guide explains the difference between the time you have to enter and the time you have to stay. If an extension does not suit you, Holidayys also arranges a visa change by bus or by flight. Check any visa's status and get a free expiry reminder on our UAE visa check tool.

What airlines check at boarding

Visit Dubai's own guidance names Emirates, flydubai, Etihad Airways and Air Arabia among the airlines that can sponsor a visit visa, alongside hotels and licensed agents. Whoever sponsors it, the airline checking you in must verify your passport and your visa or entry permit, printed or on your phone, before issuing a boarding pass; a missing or invalid document can mean being turned away at check-in rather than sorted out on arrival. Build in time for this, separately from the usual advice to arrive early for an international departure.

What goes wrong

The most common mistake is assuming South Africa already has visa-free or visa-on-arrival access, based on an outdated blog rather than the MOFA or Visit Dubai checkers above. The second is assuming the June 2026 route applies on the strength of any foreign visa: for six of the qualifying countries, Emirates asks specifically for a residence permit, not a visit visa, so check which document you actually hold. The third is leaving the permit itself at home: it is what makes you eligible, so carry it, not a photograph of it. A visit visa, however you get it, does not allow paid or unpaid work in the UAE; a proper work visa, arranged before you travel, is the lawful route into employment.

Frequently asked questions

Do South Africans need a visa to enter the UAE?

Yes, in nearly all cases. The Ministry of Foreign Affairs' checker marks South Africa "Visa Required," and Visit Dubai's own checker tells a South African tourist to arrange a visa before travelling. A visa must be arranged beforehand, through a relative, an agency, an airline or a hotel, unless you qualify for the residence permit route below.

Can South Africans get a UAE visa on arrival?

Only since 25 June 2026, and only if you also hold a valid residence permit from one of these: the United States, an EU member state, the United Kingdom, Singapore, Japan, South Korea, Australia, New Zealand or Canada. A South African passport by itself does not qualify, whatever older travel sites may say.

How much does a UAE visit visa cost for a South African?

For an agency, airline or hotel-sponsored visit visa in Dubai, GDRFA Dubai's own fee pages list AED 200 for 30 days or AED 300 for 60 days, single entry, plus 5% VAT. The residence-permit route, where you qualify, costs AED 100 for 14 days or AED 250 for 60 days, per the Ministry of Foreign Affairs.

What changed for South Africans in June 2026?

On 25 June 2026 the Ministry of Foreign Affairs opened its entry visa scheme to South Africans, alongside five other nationalities, who hold a residence permit from a short list of other countries. Before that date, this particular route existed only for Indian passport holders.

Does a UK, US or EU visa help, or do I need a residence permit?

It depends on the country. Emirates' own eligibility page says a UK, EU or US visa counts alongside a residence permit for those three. For Australia, Canada, Japan, New Zealand, South Korea and Singapore, it asks for a residence permit specifically, not a visit visa, and does not accept a student visa for Singapore. Confirm which document you hold qualifies before you rely on it.

Can a UAE resident friend or relative sponsor my visit?

Yes. A parent, spouse, sibling, child or friend living in the UAE can sponsor your visit visa through ICP or GDRFA Dubai, resting on their own residence visa, Emirates ID and income, for a stay of 30, 60 or 90 days.

Planning your visit
