UAE Visit Visa Validity: Time to Enter, Time to Stay

A UAE visit visa runs on two clocks: how long you have to enter after it is issued, and how long you may stay once you arrive. Here is how each works for every visit visa, from ICP's and GDRFA Dubai's own pages.

The short answer: a UAE visit visa has two clocks. The first is how long you have to enter: ICP's Issuance of a Visa page gives the entry permit 60 days from the date of issue. The second is how long you may stay once you are in: 30, 60 or 90 days, depending on the visa you chose. GDRFA Dubai's pages give 30 or 60 days for a visit visa sponsored by a travel agency, airline or hotel, and 30, 60 or 90 days for one sponsored by a resident relative or friend. The government portal u.ae spells out how the two clocks fit for the GCC resident eVisa: "valid for 30 days from the date of issue", then a stay of "30 days from the date of entry". To know your own visa's exact last day, check it on GDRFA Dubai's or ICP's lookup rather than counting.

The two numbers are easy to mix up. "60 days" on a visa can mean 60 days to fly in, not 60 days in the country, and a return flight booked around the wrong number can leave a visitor overstaying without knowing it. Sponsors arranging a visa for a parent or relative need to know which clock is running before they book anything.

The two clocks

Clock one: the entry window. ICP's Issuance of a Visa page, which covers visit visas for Abu Dhabi, Sharjah, Ajman, Umm Al Quwain, Ras Al Khaimah and Fujairah, says the holder "must enter the UAE within the 60-day validity period of the entry permit from its date of issuance". It adds that the entry permit can be extended before travel if needed. If you are not going to make it within the window, talk to your sponsor before it closes.

Clock two: the stay. The same page says the visa "allows the beneficiary to stay in the UAE for 30, 60, or 90 days, depending on the selected duration". GDRFA Dubai's visit visa pages give the same lengths. Neither authority's page for the ordinary visit visa says in so many words which date starts the stay, so treat the expiry date on the visa itself, or on the official lookup, as the one that counts.

Two other visas show the pattern plainly. On u.ae, the GCC resident eVisa is "valid for 30 days from the date of issue" and the holder is "allowed to stay for 30 days from the date of entry". GDRFA Dubai's five-year multi-entry tourist visa must be used for a first entry within two months of issue, extendable by two more, and its yearly stay limit counts from that first entry.

Stay lengths by visa

  • Sponsored by a travel agency, airline or hotel (GDRFA Dubai): 30 or 60 days, single or multiple entry.
  • Sponsored by a resident relative or friend (GDRFA Dubai): 30, 60 or 90 days, single or multiple entry, with a refundable guarantee.
  • Issued outside Dubai (ICP): 30, 60 or 90 days on one service, with ICP pricing single entry at AED 100 a month and multiple entry at AED 200 a month.
  • The five-year multi-entry tourist visa: up to 90 days at a time, extendable once by 90 days, with no more than 180 days in any one year. Our UAE multiple entry visa guide covers it.

Our visa desk arranges 14-day, 30-day, 60-day and 90-day single-entry visit visas and a 90-day multiple-entry visa. Whichever you hold, check the entry and expiry dates on the visa document once it is issued, not the product name.

Single entry or multiple entry

A single-entry visa covers one trip in. A multiple-entry visa lets you leave and come back while it is valid, which matters if you plan a side trip to Oman or another country during the stay. It costs more: ICP charges AED 200 a month for multiple entry against AED 100 for single entry, and GDRFA Dubai lists AED 300 or AED 500 for a 30 or 60-day multiple-entry tourist visa against AED 200 or AED 300 for single entry, plus VAT. If you hold a single-entry visa and need to leave and come back, ask your sponsor before you go.

How to see your visa's exact dates

Check the dates GDRFA Dubai or ICP hold, rather than working them out. Our UAE visa status check guide walks through both lookups: GDRFA Dubai's for a Dubai visa and ICP's File Validity service for the other six emirates. Or use our free UAE visa check: upload the visa, and our visa desk confirms its status and expiry within 24 hours and sends WhatsApp and email reminders before it runs out.

When the stay is ending: extend, change or leave

  • Extend from inside the UAE. ICP's extension page caps a tourist visit visa at 120 days in total, the original visa plus extensions, and a relative or friend visa at 180 days. Our UAE visit visa extension guide covers the fees and steps.
  • Change the visa, by a status change inside the UAE or by leaving and returning on a new visit visa. Our UAE visa change guide explains both.
  • Leave on or before the last day.

Staying past the last day brings ICP's overstay fine of AED 50 a day. Our UAE overstay fines guide covers grace periods and how to pay.

Sponsors with a residence visa: time outside the UAE

Residents who sponsor visitors often ask about their own visa too. ICP runs a permit for a resident who has been outside the UAE for 180 days or more: it is applied for from abroad, needs more than 30 days left on the residence visa, carries a fine of AED 100 for every 30 days or less spent outside, and the resident must enter within 30 days of approval. ICP's page says it does not apply to residents of Dubai, and that Golden, Green and Blue Residence holders may enter at any time while their residence is valid. Dubai residents in this position should ask GDRFA Dubai.

Frequently asked questions

How long is a UAE visit visa valid after it is issued?

For the standard visit visa, ICP gives the entry permit 60 days from its issue date to enter the UAE. The GCC resident eVisa gives 30 days, and the five-year tourist visa gives two months, extendable by two more.

How long can I stay in the UAE on a visit visa?

30, 60 or 90 days, depending on the visa. GDRFA Dubai's agency, airline or hotel visit visa offers 30 or 60 days, its relative or friend visa 30, 60 or 90 days, and ICP's visit visa for the other emirates 30, 60 or 90 days.

Does a UAE visit visa start from the issue date or the entry date?

The entry window runs from the issue date. For the GCC resident eVisa, u.ae says the stay runs from the date of entry. For the ordinary visit visa, check the expiry date on the visa or on the official lookup, since GDRFA Dubai's and ICP's pages do not state the start date in words.

What happens if I don't enter the UAE within the visa's validity?

The entry window closes, and the visa can no longer be used to enter. ICP's page says the entry permit can be extended before travel, so speak to your sponsor before the window ends rather than after.

How do I check my UAE visit visa's validity?

Use GDRFA Dubai's visa status lookup for a Dubai visa, or ICP's File Validity service for the other six emirates. Our status check guide walks through both, or our free UAE visa check does it for you.

What happens when my UAE visit visa expires?

Extend it from inside the UAE, up to 120 days in total for a tourist visit visa or 180 for a relative or friend visa, change it, or leave by the last day. After that, the overstay fine of AED 50 a day applies.
