Package overview
Seven days in Bali with a guide throughout, all entrance fees included and a traditional Balinese dinner - temples, rice terraces, beaches and markets across the island. Bali rewards being driven. The island is roughly 150 kilometres across but the roads are slow, and the distance between the cultural interior and the coast is the whole point of a week here rather than a long weekend. This package includes a professional guide and all ground arrangements, so the days are spent at the places rather than working out how to reach them. The itinerary covers the island's two characters. Inland is the temple and terrace country - the carved stone temples Bali is known for, and the tiered rice fields that are still farmed by the subak irrigation system, a cooperative water-sharing practice recognised by UNESCO. The coast is the other half: beaches, and the markets and craft villages between them. Entrance fees to everything on the itinerary are included, which matters in Bali more than most places - the temples and sites each charge separately and the small amounts add up across a week. Accommodation is four-star with daily breakfast, airport transfers are included, and the guide speaks English and Indonesian. International flights, insurance and alcohol are not included. It suits first-time visitors who want the island covered properly in one trip.

Day 1
Arrival in Bali
You are met at Ngurah Rai International Airport in Denpasar and driven to your hotel in Ubud, about 90 minutes inland depending on traffic. The rest of the day is free to settle in. Dinner this evening is not included.

Day 2
Ubud and the craft villages
Breakfast and dinner includedA day around Ubud with your guide. In the morning, the craft villages south of town, each known for one trade: silver and gold in Celuk, woodcarving in Mas, stone carving in Batubulan. Then Ubud itself: the royal palace at its centre, the art market across the road, and the Sacred Monkey Forest Sanctuary, where long-tailed macaques live among moss-covered temples. Keep bags closed and sunglasses put away; the monkeys take both. In the evening, the traditional Balinese dinner.

Day 3
Tegalalang, Tirta Empul and Mount Batur
Breakfast includedNorth from Ubud into the highlands with your guide. The Tegalalang rice terraces step down a valley still watered by subak, the island's centuries-old cooperative irrigation system. At Tirta Empul, Balinese have come to bathe in the spring-fed purification pools for over a thousand years, and visitors may join in. The road then climbs to the Kintamani ridge, which looks across the caldera to Mount Batur, an active volcano, and the lake at its foot.

Day 4
To the coast: Ulun Danu Beratan, Jatiluwih and Tanah Lot
Breakfast includedCheck out and cross the island to the coast by way of its best-known temples. Ulun Danu Beratan, in the cool highlands at Bedugul, appears to float on Lake Beratan when the water is high. Below it, the rice terraces of Jatiluwih spread across the slopes of Mount Batukaru and are part of Bali's UNESCO-listed subak landscape. The day ends at Tanah Lot, the sea temple on its rock just offshore, at sunset, before the drive to your hotel on the south coast. It is a long day, much of it on the road.

Day 5
Uluwatu at sunset
Breakfast includedA free morning at the beach. Late in the afternoon, your guide takes you south to Uluwatu Temple, on a cliff some 70 metres above the Indian Ocean at the tip of the Bukit peninsula, for the sunset. The Kecak fire dance performed at the temple at dusk is an optional extra.

Breakfast includedThe day is yours: the beach, the pool, or the shops and cafés of the south coast. A day trip by boat to Nusa Penida, for the cliffs above Kelingking Beach, or water sports at Tanjung Benoa can be added at extra cost.
