Ten days across Japan with return flights and a Japan Rail Pass included - Tokyo, Kyoto, Osaka and Mount Fuji, with a tea ceremony and a sushi-making class. Two inclusions make this package unusual and are worth reading carefully. Return international flights are included, which almost no package at this length does. And a JR Pass covers the rail network for the trip, including the shinkansen between cities - which is what makes a ten-day, four-destination itinerary practical rather than exhausting. Tokyo to Kyoto is under three hours by bullet train, and with the pass those journeys are already paid for. The route is the classic one, and it is classic for a reason. Tokyo is the contemporary city. Kyoto was the imperial capital for over a thousand years and holds the temple and garden heritage. Osaka is the food city. Mount Fuji is the day out from Tokyo, and clearest in the colder months. The two hands-on inclusions sit deliberately against the sightseeing: a traditional tea ceremony, which is a formal practice rather than a drink, and a sushi-making class. Nine nights of accommodation, daily breakfast, all entrance fees and an English-speaking guide are included. Travel insurance, personal spending, alcohol and tips are not. It suits first-time visitors to Japan who would rather have the flights, rail and route settled in one booking.

Day 1
Arrival in Tokyo
Arrive in Tokyo and check in at your hotel in Shibuya. If your flight lands in time, walk down to Shibuya Crossing in the evening, where crowds from every direction cross at once when the lights change. Dinner this evening is not included.

Day 2
Tokyo: Asakusa, the Imperial Palace and Tokyo Skytree
Breakfast includedA full day in Tokyo with your guide. Start in Asakusa at Sensoji, the city's oldest temple, approached along the stalls of Nakamise Street. Then the Imperial Palace, the Emperor's residence, seen from the outer grounds and the Nijubashi bridge across the moat. End the day at Tokyo Skytree, whose observation deck at 350 metres looks over the whole city and, on a clear day, to Mount Fuji.

Day 3
Tokyo: Tsukiji, a sushi-making class and Meiji Jingu
Breakfast includedA morning at the Tsukiji Outer Market, the stalls and small restaurants that stayed when Tokyo's wholesale fish market moved to Toyosu in 2018. Then the sushi-making class, where your instructor shows you how to season the rice and shape nigiri, and you eat what you make. In the afternoon, Meiji Jingu, the Shinto shrine set in a forest in the middle of the city, and the side streets of Harajuku beside it.

Day 4
Mount Fuji and Lake Kawaguchiko
Breakfast includedA day out to Mount Fuji with your guide. At Lake Kawaguchiko, one of the Fuji Five Lakes, the mountain rises from the far shore. Climb the nearly 400 steps to the Chureito Pagoda for the classic view of the pagoda in front of Fuji, then return to Tokyo in the evening. The mountain is often hidden by cloud, especially in summer; it is clearest from late autumn to early spring.

Day 5
Shinkansen to Kyoto and Fushimi Inari
Breakfast includedCheck out and take the shinkansen to Kyoto, under three hours on the JR Pass. Kyoto was Japan's imperial capital for more than a thousand years, and some 1,600 temples remain. In the afternoon, Fushimi Inari Taisha, where thousands of vermilion torii gates line the paths up Mount Inari. In the evening, walk through Gion, the old geisha district.

Day 6
Kyoto: the Golden Pavilion, Ryoan-ji and Arashiyama
Breakfast includedA full day of Kyoto's temples and gardens with your guide. Kinkaku-ji, the Golden Pavilion, its top two floors covered in gold leaf above a still pond. Ryoan-ji, whose garden of fifteen stones set in raked gravel is the best-known rock garden in Japan. Then west to Arashiyama for the bamboo grove and the garden of Tenryu-ji, one of the city's World Heritage temples.

Day 7
Kyoto: Kiyomizu-dera, Higashiyama and the tea ceremony
Breakfast includedMorning at Kiyomizu-dera, the temple whose wooden stage juts out over the hillside on a frame built without nails, then down through the preserved lanes of Sannenzaka and Ninenzaka in Higashiyama. In the afternoon, the traditional tea ceremony: a host prepares matcha in a set sequence of movements, each explained as it happens. The evening is free.

Day 8
To Osaka: Osaka Castle and Dotonbori
Breakfast includedCheck out and take the train to Osaka, about half an hour on the JR Pass. Visit Osaka Castle, a 1931 reconstruction of the sixteenth-century original, with a museum of the city's history inside the main tower. In the evening, Dotonbori, the canal-side street of neon signs and food stalls. Dinner is your own choice there and is not included.

Day 9
Osaka: Kuromon Market and Shinsekai
Breakfast includedOsaka is the food city, and the morning shows why. With your guide, walk through Kuromon Ichiba, the covered market locals call Osaka's kitchen, then Shinsekai and its Tsutenkaku tower, the neighbourhood known for kushikatsu. The afternoon is free for the Shinsaibashi shopping arcade, or for anything you would like to add.
