The short answer: Sri Lanka's two monsoons take turns, so one coast is usually dry while the other is wet. From December to April, the west and south coast and the hill country have their best weather, while the east coast — Trincomalee, Pasikudah, Arugam Bay — is at its wettest. From May to September that flips: the east coast turns calm and dry while the south-west monsoon brings rain to the west, south and hill country. October and November are the trickiest months, an inter-monsoon spell when rain can fall almost anywhere. Flights from Dubai take about four and a half hours, and most UAE residents now travel on a free Electronic Travel Authorisation.

The two monsoons, and which coast is dry when
Sri Lanka's Department of Meteorology divides the year into four periods: two inter-monsoon spells and two monsoons that affect opposite sides of the island. The south-west monsoon, locally called Yala, blows roughly May to September and soaks the west and south-west — the wet zone around Colombo, Galle and the hill country gets more than 2,500mm of rain a year, much of it in this period — while the east coast stays largely in its lee, dry and calm. The north-east monsoon, Maha, blows roughly December to February and reverses it: the north and east pick up the rain, while the west, south and hill country turn into the island's best dry-season weather. October and November sit between the two as a second inter-monsoon period, when the whole country can see sudden, heavy showers; a first inter-monsoon spell in March and April is generally gentler.
Because the two systems shift from year to year, treat this as the broad pattern rather than a guarantee for any specific week; the Department of Meteorology's own seasonal outlooks are the authoritative source close to your travel dates.

Read this as a guide to which coast to book, not a forecast for a single day: Colombo, Galle, Mirissa, Bentota and the hill country around Kandy and Nuwara Eliya reward a December-to-April visit; Trincomalee, Pasikudah and Arugam Bay reward May to September; the Cultural Triangle around Sigiriya, Dambulla and Anuradhapura sits inland in the island's dry zone and stays comparatively dry most of the year.
Festivals and pilgrimage season
Sinhala and Tamil New Year. The island's biggest shared holiday falls on 13 and 14 April every year, marking the sun's move into Aries on the traditional calendar. Expect transport, shops and some tour operators to slow down around the date itself, though hotels and major sites keep running.
Kandy Esala Perahera. Sri Lanka's grandest procession, honouring the Temple of the Tooth Relic, follows the lunar calendar and typically falls in July or August. In 2026 it ran from 18 to 28 August: five nights of the Kumbal Perahera from the 18th, five nights of the grander Randoli Perahera from the 23rd, and a daytime Dahawal procession on the 28th. Because the dates move with the moon, expect a similar July-or-August window in 2027, but check nearer the time rather than planning a flight around it today.
Adam's Peak (Sri Pada). The pilgrimage up Sri Pada traditionally opens on the Unduwap full-moon Poya day in December and runs to the Vesak full-moon Poya in May, with the climbing path lit and food stalls open along the route only in that window; the most recent season opened on 4 December 2025. You can climb outside the season, but without lights or services, so take a torch and start well before dawn.
Wildlife seasons: parks, elephants and whales
Yala National Park. Sri Lanka's most visited safari park customarily closes for around five to six weeks during the dry season, broadly from the start of September to around mid-October, for maintenance and to let the park recover; some years only part of the park closes. Exact dates are set year by year, so confirm with a safari operator before booking a Yala trip in September or early October — Udawalawe and Wilpattu stay open as alternatives.
Minneriya's elephant "Gathering." As the dry-season tank at Minneriya National Park shrinks, elephants from the surrounding forest gather on its exposed banks in one of Asia's largest wild elephant congregations, broadly from June to October, with numbers usually peaking in August and September. The herds disperse once the north-east monsoon's rain returns.
Whale watching. Blue and sperm whales are seen off Mirissa on the south coast roughly from November or December to April, when the north-east monsoon keeps the seas calm; sightings and crowds both peak January to March. Off Trincomalee on the east coast, the season runs the other way, roughly April or May to September, as the south-west monsoon calms that side of the island instead. The two seasons barely overlap, so which coast you book depends on when you are travelling, not which is "better."
Planning around the UAE calendar
The UAE's National Day holiday falls on 2 December 2026, expected to run 2 to 3 December. That week sits right at the start of Maha: the west and south coast and hill country are drying out but not yet at their best, while the east coast is already wet, so a Colombo, Galle or Kandy trip works better than an Arugam Bay one. The typical UAE school winter break, roughly mid-December into the first week of January, lines up well with the west and south coast's best weather, though it is also the busiest, most expensive fortnight of the year there.
Eid al-Fitr 2027 is expected around 9–10 March, depending on the moon sighting — squarely inside the west and south coast's dry season, another popular week to reserve ahead of time. In summer, June to August, Dubai is at its hottest, and this is exactly when Sri Lanka's east coast — Trincomalee, Pasikudah, Arugam Bay — is calm, dry and in season, while the west and south coast are at their wettest. If you are travelling in UAE summer, lean east.
Getting to Sri Lanka: flights and entry
Flights from Dubai
Emirates, flydubai and SriLankan Airlines all fly non-stop between Dubai and Colombo's Bandaranaike International Airport, in about four and a half hours. Etihad and Air Arabia have also flown the route from Abu Dhabi and Sharjah; check current timetables, since UAE–Sri Lanka schedules were disrupted for parts of 2026. Sri Lanka is one and a half hours ahead of the UAE.
Entry: visa and the ETA
Since 25 May 2026, Sri Lanka's Electronic Travel Authorisation (ETA) has been free for nationals of 40 countries, including the UAE, India, Pakistan and most Western passports; Filipino, Egyptian and Bangladeshi nationals are not on that list and still pay the standard fee. Everyone must still apply online before travelling, only at eta.gov.lk. See our Sri Lanka visa guide for the full list of nationalities, fees and arrival rules.
Suggested routes: 7 and 10 days by season
Seven days, December to April (the classic circuit): Colombo (1 night) – Sigiriya or Dambulla in the Cultural Triangle (2 nights) – Kandy and the hill country (2 nights) – Galle or Mirissa on the south coast (2 nights), flying home from Colombo.
Ten days, December to April: the same route with two extra nights, added either as a Yala safari on the way back from the south coast, or as a longer stay in Mirissa to combine the beach with whale watching, best roughly December to April.
Seven days, May to September (the east-coast lean): Colombo (1 night) – Sigiriya or Dambulla (2 nights) – Trincomalee or Pasikudah on the east coast (3 nights) – Kandy (1 night) on the way back to Colombo for your flight.
Ten days, May to September: add the Minneriya elephant Gathering, strongest roughly July to September, as a day trip from the Cultural Triangle, or extend east to Arugam Bay, with its best surf roughly June to August.

Frequently asked questions
What is the best month to visit Sri Lanka?
It depends which coast. December to April suits the west and south coast, Colombo and the hill country; May to September suits the east coast around Trincomalee, Pasikudah and Arugam Bay.
Is Sri Lanka good to visit in December?
Yes, for the west and south coast and the hill country, where the dry Maha season is settling in. The east coast is wetter in December, so a Colombo-Kandy-Galle route works better than a Trincomalee one.
What is the best time to visit Sri Lanka's east coast?
Roughly May to September, when the south-west monsoon keeps Trincomalee, Pasikudah and Arugam Bay calm and dry, even though the west and south coast are wet at the same time.
Do UAE residents need a visa for Sri Lanka?
Almost everyone needs an Electronic Travel Authorisation (ETA), applied for online at eta.gov.lk. It has been free for UAE, Indian and Pakistani passport holders, among 40 listed nationalities, since 25 May 2026. See our Sri Lanka visa guide for who still pays.
How long is the flight from Dubai to Sri Lanka?
About four and a half hours non-stop to Colombo on Emirates, flydubai or SriLankan Airlines.
When is the Kandy Esala Perahera festival?
It follows the lunar calendar and usually falls in July or August. The 2026 festival ran from 18 to 28 August; expect a similar window in 2027, and check closer to the date.
