The short answer: late April to June and September are Switzerland's most comfortable, best-value months: mild lowland weather (roughly 15–22°C by day), open mountain passes and manageable crowds. July and August are the hottest and busiest, when Interlaken in particular fills with visitors from the Gulf. Zermatt's 2026–27 ski season runs 1 November to 25 April, and the Klein Matterhorn glacier above it stays skiable through summer too. The Glacier Express is not year-round: it pauses for maintenance roughly mid-October to early December. For the full budget, visa and a 7-day itinerary, see our Switzerland trip from Dubai guide; this one is about timing.

Figures are average daily high/low in °C, 1991–2020 climate normals (MeteoSwiss data, via NOAA and Wikipedia's city climate tables) for the Zurich-Fluntern, Lucerne, Interlaken and Zermatt weather stations. Zermatt, at 1,638m, runs noticeably colder than the three valley towns at every time of year, which is the whole reason it has a ski season and they don't.
Switzerland's four seasons
Summer (July–August): hot, busy, and when Gulf travellers go
July and August are Switzerland's hottest months, with Zurich and Lucerne both averaging 24–25°C by day. It's also peak season: hotel rates and tour prices are at their highest of the year, and Interlaken in particular gets busy with visitors from the Gulf. Zermatt and the high Alps run 8–10°C cooler than the lowlands on the same day, which is why most hiking itineraries move up there once Zurich gets properly hot.
Shoulder season (June and September): the better-value window
June and September sit either side of the summer peak and are, for most UAE travellers, the more comfortable choice: daytime temperatures in the high teens to low 20s, the mountain passes and cable cars all running, and noticeably fewer people at Jungfraujoch, in Zermatt and on the lake boats than in July or August. Early June can still have snow on the higher passes; September tends to be drier and gives clearer mountain views.
Winter and ski season (around 1 November to April)
Zermatt's own 2026–27 season (Skiing Unlimited) runs 1 November 2026 to 25 April 2027, and most other Swiss resorts, including the Jungfrau region above Interlaken, run a broadly similar window from around early or mid-December to April. Above Zermatt, the Klein Matterhorn glacier area, marketed as Europe's largest and highest summer skiing area, keeps a run open through summer as well, closing at midday once the snow softens, so Zermatt gets closer to a year-round ski base than most Swiss resorts even though it isn't literally open 365 days. Our Switzerland trip from Dubai guide has the practical skiing costs and logistics.
Autumn colours (October)
October is when the larch forests above Zermatt and across the Valais turn gold, usually peaking in the second half of the month, and it's also one of the best-value months: shoulder-season pricing with most lifts and passes still running. Some smaller cable cars and mountain roads close for a few weeks either side of this month for maintenance, so check specific operators if one particular route matters to your plan.
Christmas markets in Switzerland
Switzerland runs its own Christmas markets alongside the bigger names in Germany and Austria. Basel's market (Barfüsserplatz, Münsterplatz and Claraplatz) runs 26 November to 23 December 2026. Zurich has several running at once rather than one big market: Münsterhof, the Old Town's Dörfli, the main station's Polarzauber and others run from 19 November to around 23 or 24 December 2026, while the Uetliberg Winter Wonderland on the hill above the city runs through to 31 January 2027. Montreux Noël, on Lake Geneva, runs 20 November to 24 December 2026. For the bigger markets in Germany, Austria and France within reach of a Switzerland trip, see our best Christmas markets in Europe guide.
When the mountain passes, trains and cable cars run
The high Alpine passes, the Grimsel, Furka and Susten among them, are seasonal roads: they typically open from late May or June and close again by late October or early November, snow and avalanche risk permitting, and the exact dates move every year. By early November, when we checked, the Furka and Susten passes for 2026 had already closed for the season. Two of the big attractions run all year regardless of road closures: the Jungfraujoch, reached by cog railway from Interlaken, and Mt Titlis above Engelberg, both open 365 days (check current hours before you go, since both still adjust them seasonally). The Glacier Express, the scenic train between Zermatt and St Moritz, is the one exception worth knowing: it pauses for maintenance roughly mid-October to early December each year, so it isn't an option if your trip falls in that window.
Swiss National Day, 1 August
1 August is Switzerland's national holiday, marking the Federal Charter of 1291 and a public holiday since 1994. Expect bonfires, fireworks and flag displays, especially around lakes, and busier hotels in the days around it, since it falls in the middle of the summer peak anyway.
UAE holidays and when Swiss weather lines up
| UAE holiday | 2026/27 dates | Switzerland at that time |
|---|---|---|
| National Day | 2–3 December 2026 | Early winter; Zermatt's ski season just opened (1 Nov) |
| School winter break | 14 December 2026 – 3 January 2027 | Deep ski season; Basel and Zurich's Christmas markets closing out, some into early January |
| New Year | 1 January 2027 | Deep winter, good for a ski trip |
| Eid al-Adha (expected) | Around 16–17 May 2027, moon sighting dependent | Late spring, close to Switzerland's best weather window |
| UAE summer school holidays | Roughly early July to late August 2027 | Switzerland's hottest, busiest and most expensive season |
The 2026–27 school year for Dubai and Sharjah schools ends 1–2 July 2027, per the Ministry of Education calendar; most schools reopen in late August, though the exact date for the 2027–28 year had not been published when we checked. Travelling as a family over the summer break means Switzerland at its priciest and most crowded, so book Jungfraujoch, Titlis and the Glacier Express well ahead. Eid al-Adha's exact date depends on moon sighting and will move by a day or two either way; confirm closer to the time.
Getting around: the Swiss Travel Pass
A Swiss Travel Pass covers unlimited travel on most trains, buses and boats, plus free or discounted entry to many museums, for a set number of consecutive days. The 4-day, 2nd class adult pass costs CHF 309 (about AED 1,360 at recent rates); 3, 8 and 15-day options also exist through the Swiss Travel System and SBB. For most Switzerland-only trips of a week or less it tends to work out cheaper than buying individual tickets, especially once the Jungfraujoch or Glacier Express is added in. The full passenger costs and a day-by-day budget are in our Switzerland trip from Dubai guide.
Before you go: practical tips
- Pack for a 15–20°C swing between the valley towns and anywhere above about 2,000m, even in summer: a packable down jacket earns its space in the bag.
- Mountain railways and cable cars sell out on clear days in peak season (July–August and around Christmas/New Year); book Jungfraujoch and Titlis a few days ahead rather than on arrival.
- A Schengen visa is required for most UAE residents (Emiratis excepted); see our Schengen visa service and Switzerland visa from Dubai guide, and start the appointment process before you book non-refundable tickets.
- Combining Switzerland with a ski trip: check Zermatt's current lift status directly, since glacier weather and wind close individual lifts even inside the main season.
Frequently asked questions
What is the best time to visit Switzerland?
Late April to June and September are the most comfortable and best-value months: mild weather, open mountain passes and fewer crowds than July and August. December to April suits a ski-focused trip instead.
Is Switzerland cheaper to visit outside summer?
Generally yes. Hotel rates and tour prices peak in July and August and around Christmas and New Year; April to May and October to November are the better-value shoulder months, with most attractions still running.
Can you ski in Switzerland in summer?
Only in one place on this list: the Klein Matterhorn glacier area above Zermatt, Europe's largest and highest summer skiing area, which keeps a run open through summer, closing at midday once the snow softens.
Does the Glacier Express run all year?
No. It pauses for maintenance roughly mid-October to early December each year. Outside that window it runs year-round between Zermatt and St Moritz.
When do the Swiss mountain passes close for winter?
High passes such as the Grimsel, Furka and Susten typically close by late October or early November and reopen from late May or June, depending on snowfall. Jungfraujoch and Mt Titlis stay open all year regardless, since both are reached by railway or cable car rather than road.
Do UAE residents need a visa for Switzerland?
Most do. Switzerland is in the Schengen area, so UAE residents other than Emiratis need a Schengen visa, applied for through VFS Global in Dubai or Abu Dhabi. See our Switzerland visa from Dubai guide for fees and documents.
