The short answer: Emiratis don't need a visa for Switzerland: they can stay up to 90 days in any 180. Indian, Pakistani, Filipino, Egyptian, Bangladeshi and Sri Lankan nationals living in the UAE need a Schengen visa. Switzerland isn't in the EU, but it is in the Schengen area. You fill in the application form online, then hand in your documents at VFS Global in Dubai or Abu Dhabi, and the Swiss Embassy in Abu Dhabi decides. The visa fee is AED 365 for adults, the dirham price of the EUR 90 Schengen fee, plus VFS's service charge. Processing generally takes 15 days.

The Alps, Lucerne, Interlaken and Zermatt top the list for summer escapes from the UAE heat, and for snow in winter. Switzerland issues Schengen visas, so a Swiss visa also covers the other Schengen countries, as long as Switzerland is your main destination.

Who needs a visa for Switzerland

Whether you need a visa depends on your passport. UAE citizens can visit Switzerland and the rest of the Schengen area without a visa. They will need the EU's ETIAS travel authorisation once it starts, and it will apply to Switzerland as well, even though Switzerland isn't in the EU. It hasn't started yet, and the EU says it will announce the date several months ahead.

Indian, Pakistani, Filipino, Egyptian, Bangladeshi and Sri Lankan nationals need a Schengen visa, and so do most other nationalities living in the UAE. Schengen rules say you apply in the country where you legally live, so UAE residents apply in the UAE, not at home.

Apply to Switzerland if it is your main destination, where you spend the most nights. Five nights in Lucerne and Interlaken and two in Milan is a Swiss application; the reverse is an Italian one. See our Schengen visa guide for how the rule works.

How to apply from Dubai or Abu Dhabi

  1. Fill in the Schengen application form online on the Swiss government's visa site, then print it and sign it. Since VFS's new contract started on 1 July 2025, you need the completed form before you can book.
  2. Book an appointment on VFS Global's Switzerland site for the UAE. Booking is free. There are no walk-ins.
  3. Attend your appointment at VFS in Dubai or Abu Dhabi. You hand in your documents, give fingerprints and a photo if you haven't in the last 59 months, and pay the fees. Children under 12 don't give fingerprints.
  4. Wait about 15 days while VFS sends your file to the embassy in Abu Dhabi. You can't take your passport back during processing, so don't plan other trips in the meantime.

The Dubai VFS centre moved within Wafi Mall in March 2025, to Phase 5 (Horus), first floor. Some guides still show the old Phase 2 address, so use the one on your appointment letter. The Swiss Consulate General in Dubai doesn't take visa applications: every Schengen visa goes through VFS. Spouses and children of Swiss, EU or EFTA citizens can book with the embassy's visa section in Abu Dhabi instead.

Documents

The embassy's checklist for a tourist visit from the UAE asks for:

  • Passport issued within the last ten years, signed, with at least two blank pages side by side, valid at least three months after you leave the Schengen area
  • UAE residence visa valid at least three months after you leave the Schengen area
  • The application form, signed, with one photo glued on: 35 by 45 mm, light background, no older than six months
  • Proof of accommodation for every night: hotel bookings, a rental contract or proof that you own property
  • Return flight reservation
  • Travel medical insurance with at least EUR 30,000 of cover for the whole Schengen area and your whole stay, including repatriation
  • Proof of funds: payslips, your last three months of bank statements, or an international credit card with its statements
  • A letter from your employer on letterhead, stamped and signed by someone other than you, stating your position, joining date, salary and approved leave, and confirming your job after the trip. Business owners must bring their original trade licence; dependants bring an NOC from their visa sponsor.

Documents must be in English, German, French or Italian, or translated.

Visiting family or friends

Instead of a hotel booking, bring an invitation letter signed by your host for the whole stay, with a copy of their Swiss passport or ID. A host who isn't Swiss adds a copy of their passport and Swiss residence permit.

Children

Both parents sign a child's application form and attach copies of their passports. A child travelling without both parents needs an original authorisation, signed in front of a visa officer or legalised, with copies of the parents' passports.

How much money you need to show

The UAE checklist doesn't print a figure. Swiss missions elsewhere use a guideline of CHF 100 a day of your stay, so a week means showing roughly CHF 700, about AED 3,100 at recent rates, on top of your flights and hotels.

Fees and processing time

  • Visa fee: AED 365 for adults and AED 180 for children aged 6 to 11, from the embassy's price list valid from 5 October 2026. Children under 6 pay nothing.
  • How to pay: in dirhams only, by card or cash. The fee is set in euros, so the dirham amount moves a little when the embassy updates its rates; the price list shows Swiss francs for reference only.
  • VFS service charge: on top of the visa fee, and reported at about AED 110 to 125. VFS shows the amount when you book.
  • Processing: generally 15 days, according to the embassy's checklists. The embassy can ask for more documents or an interview, which takes longer.

You can apply up to six months before you travel and no later than 15 days before. Fees aren't refunded if you are refused. The only payments are the visa fee and VFS's own charges; don't pay anyone who offers to sell you an appointment.

At the border

Since April 2026, Switzerland and every other Schengen country register non-EU visitors in the EU's Entry/Exit System. On your first trip since it started, you give fingerprints and a photo at passport control instead of getting a stamp.

Flights from the UAE

  • Emirates flies non-stop from Dubai to Zurich and Geneva every day, in about seven hours.
  • Etihad flies non-stop from Abu Dhabi to Zurich and Geneva.
  • SWISS suspended its Zurich to Dubai flights in March 2026 and plans to restart them on 27 October 2026.

Flights between the UAE and Europe were disrupted for much of 2026, so check your flight with the airline before you book, and make sure the reservation you submit matches your application dates.

Planning a trip to Switzerland

A week covers Zurich, Lucerne and Interlaken by train; add two days for Zermatt and the Matterhorn, or Geneva and Montreux on Lake Geneva. Milan is a little over three hours from Zurich by train and in Schengen, so the same visa covers it.
