The short answer: Emiratis can visit South Africa for up to 90 days without a visa. Most other UAE residents, including Indian, Pakistani, Filipino, Egyptian, Bangladeshi and Sri Lankan nationals, need a visitor's visa. Where you apply depends on which emirate issued your residence visa: VFS Global in Wafi Mall, Dubai, for Dubai and the northern emirates, or the South African Embassy in Abu Dhabi for Abu Dhabi and Al Ain. The VFS service fee is AED 275.44, on top of the visa fee. Processing takes at least six working days, and you can apply no earlier than one month before you travel. South Africa's new ETA is spreading, but it does not yet replace the visa for most UAE residents.

Cape Town and Table Mountain, the winelands, the Garden Route and safari in and around Kruger are about eight to ten hours' non-stop flight from Dubai. Here is what each group of UAE residents needs.

Visa-free travel for Emiratis

The UAE has been on South Africa's list of visa-exempt countries since August 2019. The Department of Home Affairs' current schedule lets UAE ordinary passport holders stay up to 90 days without a visa. You get a stamp on arrival, so carry a passport with at least two completely blank pages, plus your return ticket and hotel details in case the immigration officer asks.

The new Electronic Travel Authorisation (ETA) is reported to be optional for visa-exempt nationalities such as Emiratis, not a requirement. Check with your airline before you fly in case that changes.

Who needs a South African visa

South Africa's exempt list does not include ordinary passports from India, Pakistan, the Philippines, Egypt, Bangladesh or Sri Lanka, so their nationals need a visa wherever they live. Some visa websites claim Filipinos or Pakistanis can enter visa-free. South Africa's own list says otherwise, and it is the one that counts at the border.

Your UAE residence decides where you apply, not whether you need a visa.

Where to apply: Dubai or Abu Dhabi

This is the detail that catches people out. VFS Global runs one South Africa visa centre in the UAE, and it only takes applications from residents of certain emirates:

  • Residence visa from Dubai, Sharjah, Ajman, Umm Al Quwain, Ras Al Khaimah or Fujairah: apply at the VFS South Africa visa centre in Wafi Mall, Dubai (First Floor, Phase 5, Horus). It opens Monday to Friday, 9am to 5pm, with shorter hours in Ramadan. Book an appointment online first.
  • Residence visa from Abu Dhabi or Al Ain: VFS will not accept your application. You apply directly at the South African Embassy in Abu Dhabi; contact it for an appointment and its current checklist.

Older news articles give a different unit in Wafi Mall for the VFS centre. The centre has moved within the mall, so use the address on VFS's own site.

Documents

The South African Consulate-General in Dubai publishes its checklists through VFS. Based on its current short-stay checklist, expect to provide:

  • Form DHA-84, completed in black ink
  • One recent colour photo, 4.5 by 3.5 cm, white background, no more than six months old
  • Passport, machine-readable, valid at least 90 days beyond your return date, with at least two blank visa pages
  • UAE residence visa and Emirates ID copy, with the residence visa valid at least three months beyond your return
  • Bank statements: the last three months, stamped by the bank, issued within the last seven days, with a balance of at least AED 3,000
  • A letter from your employer confirming your job and leave dates, or your trade licence if you run a business
  • Flight bookings, provisional or confirmed, including any domestic flights within South Africa
  • Hotel bookings, or an invitation letter and ID from the friend or relative you are staying with
  • Travel medical insurance valid for South Africa
  • A yellow fever certificate, if it applies to you (see below)

If a family member is paying for your trip, the checklist asks for a signed sponsorship letter, the sponsor's original bank statement and a copy of their passport and UAE visa. VFS only accepts complete applications, so check the current checklist before your appointment.

Fees and processing time

  • VFS service fee: AED 275.44, paid when you book your appointment
  • Visa fee: paid at the counter when you submit. Home Affairs lists a visitor's visa at R425 in its August 2026 fee schedule, and the Abu Dhabi embassy's own fee schedule, dated 2022, shows AED 140. Check the current amount with VFS or the embassy before you go.
  • Processing: at least six working days for a complete application, according to the consulate's checklist
  • When to apply: no earlier than one month before you travel

There is no paid fast-track. VFS sells premium services such as lounges and courier return, but it says they do not speed up the decision. With a one-month window and a six-day minimum, apply about three to four weeks before you fly.

How long you can stay on a visa

Visitor's visas are usually for up to 90 days, but the embassy sets the conditions case by case and prints them on the visa label. Check the dates and conditions on your visa as soon as you collect your passport.

South Africa's new ETA

South Africa launched an Electronic Travel Authorisation (ETA) on 12 August 2026, starting with ordinary passport holders of China, India, Indonesia and Mexico. A R500 processing fee has applied since 17 August 2026. In early October 2026, the Home Affairs minister said the ETA was live for 53 countries, with decisions within 24 hours, but the full list had not been published.

  • Indian nationals were among the first eligible, so they may be able to apply for an ETA online instead of going to VFS. Check with the Department of Home Affairs first.
  • Airports: when it launched, the ETA was valid only for arrivals at Johannesburg (OR Tambo), Cape Town and Lanseria. Fly into another airport, such as Durban, and you need a regular visa. Check your routing against the visa before you book.
  • Other nationalities: Pakistani, Filipino, Egyptian, Bangladeshi and Sri Lankan nationals had not been named as eligible in any source we could find. Until they are, apply at VFS or the embassy as above.

Yellow fever and health

South Africa requires a yellow fever vaccination certificate from travellers aged one or over who arrive from a yellow-fever risk country, or who spent more than 12 hours in transit at an airport in one. The UAE is not a risk country, so flying from Dubai or Abu Dhabi does not trigger it. It matters if you are combining South Africa with Kenya, Uganda or another country on the list. The certificate must be issued at least ten days before you arrive.

Flights from the UAE

  • Emirates flies non-stop from Dubai to Johannesburg (four times a day, about 8 hours), Cape Town (three times a day, about 9 hours 40 minutes) and Durban (daily, about 8 hours 20 minutes).
  • Etihad resumed Abu Dhabi to Johannesburg in June 2026, four times a week, in about 8 hours 15 minutes.

Schedules change by season, so check with the airline before you book.

Frequently asked questions

Do UAE residents need a visa for South Africa?

It depends on your passport. Emiratis can visit for up to 90 days without a visa. Indian, Pakistani, Filipino, Egyptian, Bangladeshi and Sri Lankan nationals need a visitor's visa, applied for at VFS in Dubai or the South African Embassy in Abu Dhabi.

Where do I apply for a South Africa visa in the UAE?

If your residence visa was issued by Dubai, Sharjah, Ajman, Umm Al Quwain, Ras Al Khaimah or Fujairah, at VFS Global in Wafi Mall, Dubai. If it was issued by Abu Dhabi or Al Ain, at the South African Embassy in Abu Dhabi.

How much is the South Africa visa fee from Dubai?

VFS charges a service fee of AED 275.44, and the visa fee is paid at the counter when you submit. Home Affairs lists the visitor's visa at R425; check the dirham amount with VFS before your appointment.

How long does a South Africa visa take from Dubai?

At least six working days for a complete application. You can apply no earlier than one month before you travel, so aim for three to four weeks ahead.

Can Indians in Dubai get a South Africa ETA?

Possibly. India was one of the first four countries on South Africa's ETA, launched in August 2026 with a R500 fee. It was valid only for arrivals at OR Tambo, Cape Town and Lanseria at launch. Check with the Department of Home Affairs before you choose the ETA over a VFS visa.

Do I need a yellow fever certificate for South Africa from Dubai?

No, not if you fly from the UAE. You need one only if you arrive from, or spent more than 12 hours in transit through, a yellow-fever risk country.

Planning a trip to South Africa
