The short answer: most UAE residents should get Egypt's e-visa online at visa2egypt.gov.eg before they fly. It costs USD 30 for a single entry or USD 65 for multiple entries, allows 30 days per visit, and Indian passports are eligible. Emiratis and other GCC citizens need no visa. A visa on arrival exists for some passports and for some GCC residents, but the rules for residents are applied unevenly, so do not rely on it.

Cairo is under four hours from Dubai, and Egypt is one of the best-value long breaks from the UAE: the pyramids and the Grand Egyptian Museum in Giza, the temples of Luxor and Aswan, and the Red Sea at Hurghada and Sharm El Sheikh.

The Egypt e-visa

The e-visa is issued by Egypt's Ministry of Interior on the official portal, visa2egypt.gov.eg. Many look-alike sites charge more for the same visa; use the official one or an agent you trust.

What you need

  • A passport valid for at least six months from your arrival
  • Your travel dates and the address of your first hotel
  • A card to pay the fee online

Apply at least seven days before you travel; the portal asks for that much notice and does not promise a processing time. Print the approval and carry it with your passport.

Single or multiple entry?

The single-entry visa (USD 30) is valid for three months and allows one stay of up to 30 days. The multiple-entry visa (USD 65) is valid for six months, each visit again up to 30 days. Take the multiple-entry visa if you plan a side trip to Jordan or Saudi Arabia and back. Egypt raised both fees from USD 25 and USD 60 in 2026, so older guides quote the lower prices.

Visa on arrival: who can rely on it

Egypt sells visas on arrival at its airports for USD 30, paid in cash at the bank counters before immigration. Whether you qualify depends on your passport:

  • Passports eligible for visa on arrival, such as the UK and EU countries, can buy one at the airport.
  • Indian passport holders can get a visa on arrival if they hold a valid, already used visa for the US, the UK, the Schengen area, Japan, Canada, Australia or New Zealand.
  • GCC residents: Egypt announced in 2017 that residents of GCC countries with residence valid for six months could get a visa on arrival, and some travellers still use it. Others report being refused, and airlines in the UAE can refuse to board passengers whose eligibility is unclear.

Our advice is simple: if you can get the e-visa, get it before you fly. A visa you already hold cannot be refused at check-in.

If you cannot get an e-visa

Nationalities that are not eligible for the e-visa or a visa on arrival apply through the Egyptian embassy in Abu Dhabi or the consulate-general in Dubai. Allow several weeks, and ask the consulate for its current document list before you book flights.

Getting from Dubai to Egypt

Dubai to Cairo takes about three hours and 45 minutes, with Emirates, flydubai and EgyptAir among the airlines on the route, and Air Arabia from Sharjah. Hurghada, Sharm El Sheikh and Luxor have direct flights from the UAE too, often seasonal.
