The short answer: most UAE residents, Emiratis included, need an Australian Visitor visa (subclass 600), Tourist stream. You apply online through ImmiAccount; the fee has been AUD 250 since 1 July 2026. On 8 October 2026, Home Affairs' processing guide showed half of applications decided within 21 days and 90% within 33 days. If you are asked for biometrics, you give them at VFS Global in Dubai or Abu Dhabi for AED 119. Residents with UK, US, Canadian, Japanese, Singaporean or Malaysian passports can use the simpler ETA instead, and most EU passports the eVisitor.

Sydney Harbour, the Great Barrier Reef, Melbourne's laneways and the beaches of Perth are a non-stop flight from Dubai. The visa is entirely online, so the work is in the documents you upload rather than in an appointment.

Which Australian visa do you need?

It depends on your passport, not your UAE residence.

  • Visitor visa, subclass 600 (Tourist stream): for Emirati, Indian, Pakistani, Filipino, Egyptian, Bangladeshi, Sri Lankan and most other passports. None of these countries is on the ETA or eVisitor lists.
  • Electronic Travel Authority (ETA, subclass 601): for 34 passports, including the UK, the US, Canada, Japan, South Korea, Singapore, Malaysia, Hong Kong and several European countries. You apply on the AustralianETA app.
  • eVisitor (subclass 651): free, for 36 European passports, including most of the EU.

If you hold a UK or EU passport and live in Dubai, use the ETA or eVisitor; the rest of this guide is about subclass 600.

How to apply for an Australia tourist visa from Dubai

  1. Create an ImmiAccount on the Department of Home Affairs website, immi.homeaffairs.gov.au.
  2. Choose Visitor visa (600), Tourist stream, applying outside Australia.
  3. Upload your documents (below). Every family member needs a separate application, even children on a parent's passport, but you can submit them together.
  4. Pay AUD 250 per applicant. Home Affairs does not start processing until you pay.
  5. Give biometrics or have a medical only if asked. Home Affairs will tell you.

The Australian Embassy in Abu Dhabi and the Consulate-General in Dubai no longer process visas or answer visa enquiries; everything goes through Home Affairs online.

Documents for an Australian visitor visa

  • Passport bio pages, and your national ID card if you have one
  • UAE residence visa and Emirates ID
  • Itemised personal bank statements for the last three months, plus payslips and any savings or term deposits
  • A letter from your UAE employer confirming your job, leave dates and that you will return
  • Evidence of ties: family in the UAE, property, or study
  • An invitation letter if you are visiting family or friends, stating your relationship, how long you will stay and who is paying
  • Your travel history: previous visas to Australia, the UK, the US, Canada or Schengen countries help show you are a genuine visitor

How much money do you need in your bank?

Home Affairs does not set a minimum balance. You must show you have enough to pay for your trip and that you are a genuine visitor. Figures quoted by agencies are their own estimates, not an official requirement.

Biometrics and health checks

Not every applicant is asked for biometrics. If you are, book an appointment at an Australian Biometrics Collection Centre run by VFS Global: in Dubai at Wafi Mall or in Abu Dhabi at The Mall, World Trade Centre. The service fee is AED 119. Health examinations are also requested case by case.

Health insurance is not always a condition of the visa, but Home Affairs strongly recommends it: you pay all your own medical costs in Australia, and the UAE has no reciprocal healthcare agreement with Australia. Some visas are granted with condition 8501, which makes insurance compulsory.

The Frequent Traveller stream

The 10-year Frequent Traveller visa, AUD 1,845, is open only to citizens of China and ten Southeast Asian countries, including the Philippines, Indonesia, Malaysia, Thailand and Vietnam. A Filipino resident who visits Australia often may find it worth the cost. It is not open to Indian, Pakistani or Emirati passport holders, whatever some guides say.
