The short answer: Emiratis don't need a visa for Hungary: they can stay up to 90 days in any 180. Indian, Pakistani, Filipino, Egyptian, Bangladeshi and Sri Lankan nationals living in the UAE need a Schengen visa. You apply at VFS Global in Dubai or Abu Dhabi, and the Embassy of Hungary in Abu Dhabi decides. The visa fee is AED 389 for adults, plus a VFS service charge of AED 117.78. Processing takes at least 15 calendar days, and the checklist asks for six months of bank statements.

Budapest's thermal baths, the Danube and the Parliament, and Lake Balaton in summer are why most UAE residents go. Hungary issues Schengen visas, so a Hungarian visa also covers the other Schengen countries, as long as Hungary is your main destination.

Who needs a visa for Hungary

Whether you need a visa depends on your passport. UAE citizens have been able to visit Hungary and the rest of the Schengen area without a visa since May 2015. They will need the EU's ETIAS travel authorisation once it starts; it hasn't yet, and the EU says it will announce the date several months ahead.

Indian, Pakistani, Filipino, Egyptian, Bangladeshi and Sri Lankan nationals need a Schengen visa, and so do most other nationalities living in the UAE. The embassy says you can apply in the UAE only if you are a citizen or resident here.

Apply to Hungary if it is your main destination, where you spend the most nights. The embassy's own example: five days in Hungary, four in Austria and three in the Czech Republic is a Hungarian application. See our Schengen visa guide for how the rule works.

Hungary stopped taking new guest-worker residence permit applications on 6 June 2026. That change is about work permits, not holidays: it doesn't affect tourist visas.

How to apply from Dubai or Abu Dhabi

  1. Fill in the Schengen application form online, then print it and sign it. For a child under 18, both parents sign.
  2. Book an appointment on VFS Global's Hungary site for the UAE, which the embassy links from its visa page.
  3. Attend your appointment at VFS in Wafi Mall, Dubai (first floor, Phase 5, Horus) or the World Trade Centre mall, Abu Dhabi (level B2). You hand in your documents, give fingerprints and pay the fees. The centres have a photo booth if you need a new photo.
  4. Wait at least 15 calendar days. VFS sends your application to the embassy the next working day, and the embassy decides.

There is no Hungarian consulate in Dubai: the embassy's consular section is in Al Khazna Tower, Abu Dhabi, and handles appeals and a few residence permit types, not tourist visas. Some websites say Hungary takes applications in Dubai only; the embassy lists both VFS centres.

Documents

VFS's tourism checklist for Hungary, updated in October 2025, asks for:

  • The signed application form
  • Passport and a copy, signed, with at least two blank pages side by side, no older than ten years, valid at least three months after you return
  • UAE residence visa valid at least three months after you return
  • One recent photo on a white or off-white background, no older than six months
  • A letter from your employer stating your position, salary and start date, or a legally translated trade licence if you own a business
  • A leave certificate or NOC from your employer with your leave dates
  • Hotel booking with the hotel's full address. If you stay with family or friends, write your host's full address in the form instead.
  • Bank statements for the last six months, original and stamped by the bank. A dependant can submit their sponsor's statements.
  • Travel medical insurance with at least EUR 30,000 of cover for the whole Schengen area, including repatriation
  • Return flight reservation and a copy

Visiting family or friends

You don't need an invitation letter. There is no separate family-visit checklist in the UAE: the embassy sends applicants to VFS's tourism checklist, which asks you to write your host's full address in the application form (name, street, building number, city and postcode) in place of a hotel booking. The embassy can still ask for more documents, so a short signed letter from your host saying how you are related and where you will stay, with a copy of their Hungarian ID card or residence permit, is worth bringing.

Hungary's missions in some other countries ask for an invitation that a notary has certified, or one endorsed by Hungary's immigration authority, in which the host guarantees your accommodation and costs. The UAE checklist doesn't.

Children

Bring the child's original birth certificate, translated and legalised if it was issued outside the EU, and copies of both parents' passports. If only one parent applies with the child, bring a consent letter from the other parent or a sole custody document.

How much money you need to show

Hungary doesn't publish a daily amount for UAE applicants, and the figures quoted online vary widely. What the checklist asks for is six months of statements, so a steady salary over that period matters more than one month's balance.

Fees and processing time

Visa fee, children aged 6 to 11AED 195

VFS says the dirham amounts follow the exchange rate and can change without notice, and that no fee is refunded. The embassy says the procedure takes 15 days, can be extended to 30, and in exceptional cases to 60 when more documents are needed. It also says it has no way to speed up a decision. You can apply up to six months before you travel and no later than 15 days before; the embassy advises applying as soon as you can.

If you are refused, you can appeal in person at the embassy in Abu Dhabi within eight calendar days of receiving the refusal, without an appointment. The appeal fee is EUR 160, paid by debit card, and isn't refunded. The embassy takes 15 days to decide an appeal, and can extend that once by 21 days.

At the border

Since April 2026, Hungary and every other Schengen country register non-EU visitors in the EU's Entry/Exit System. On your first trip since it started, you give fingerprints and a photo at passport control instead of getting a stamp.

Flights from the UAE

  • Emirates flies non-stop from Dubai to Budapest, in about six hours. It cut flights in spring 2026, and the number of flights a week has changed through the year.
  • flydubai restarted Dubai to Budapest on 31 July 2026, three times a week, and plans to fly daily from 25 October 2026.
  • Etihad doesn't fly non-stop from Abu Dhabi to Budapest; Abu Dhabi residents fly from Dubai or connect in Europe.

Flights between the UAE and Europe were disrupted for much of 2026, so check your flight with the airline before you book, and make sure the reservation you submit matches your application dates.

Planning a trip to Hungary

Four days covers Budapest, its baths and a Danube cruise; a week adds Szentendre and the Danube Bend, or Lake Balaton in summer. Vienna is under three hours from Budapest by train and in Schengen too, so one visa covers both. See our Schengen visa services for help preparing your Hungary application, browse holiday packages, or talk to us about flights and hotels.
