The short answer: Emiratis don't need a visa for Austria: they can stay up to 90 days in any 180. Indian, Pakistani, Filipino, Egyptian, Bangladeshi and Sri Lankan nationals living in the UAE need a Schengen visa. You apply at VFS Global in Dubai or Abu Dhabi, and the Austrian Embassy in Abu Dhabi decides; there is no Austrian consulate in Dubai. The visa fee is EUR 90 for adults, plus VFS's service charge. Austria decides within 15 calendar days, or up to 45 if it needs more checks.

Vienna's palaces and coffee houses, Salzburg, Hallstatt and the lakes, and the Alps in summer and ski season are why UAE residents go. Austria issues Schengen visas, so an Austrian visa also covers the other Schengen countries, as long as Austria is your main destination.

Who needs a visa for Austria

Whether you need a visa depends on your passport. UAE citizens have been able to visit Austria and the rest of the Schengen area without a visa since May 2015. They will need the EU's ETIAS travel authorisation once it starts; it hasn't yet, and the EU says it will announce the date several months ahead.

Indian, Pakistani, Filipino, Egyptian, Bangladeshi and Sri Lankan nationals need a Schengen visa, and so do most other nationalities living in the UAE. EU rules say you apply in the country where you legally live, so UAE residents apply in the UAE, not at home.

Apply to Austria if it is your main destination, where you spend the most nights. Five nights in Vienna and Salzburg and two in Munich is an Austrian application; the reverse is a German one. See our Schengen visa guide for how the rule works.

How to apply from Dubai or Abu Dhabi

  1. Fill in the Schengen application form, then print it and sign it.
  2. Book an appointment on VFS Global's Austria site for the UAE, which the embassy links from its own page. Each applicant needs their own appointment, children included. Guides say Abu Dhabi and Al Ain residents use the Abu Dhabi centre and residents of the other emirates use Dubai.
  3. Attend your appointment at VFS's joint visa centre in Wafi Mall, Dubai, or in the World Trade Centre mall, Abu Dhabi. You hand in your documents, give fingerprints unless you gave them for a Schengen visa in the last 59 months, and pay the fees.
  4. Wait about 15 calendar days for the decision, then collect your passport from the centre.

The Dubai centre moved within Wafi Mall in March 2025, to Phase 5 (Horus), first floor; some guides still show the old Phase 2 address, so use the one on your appointment letter. Austria's only other office in Dubai is Austria Tourism, which doesn't handle visas.

Documents

Austria's foreign ministry lists what every applicant needs, and VFS adds the UAE items:

  • Passport issued within the last ten years, valid at least three months after you leave the Schengen area, with at least two blank pages, plus a copy of the photo page and of any earlier Schengen visas
  • The signed application form and one photo, 35 by 45 mm
  • Your UAE residence visa and Emirates ID. Austria doesn't publish a minimum validity; plan on at least three months beyond your return date, which is what most Schengen states ask.
  • Return flight reservation. Austria says a reservation is enough; you don't need to buy the ticket first.
  • Hotel bookings for every night, with dates that match your flights
  • Proof of your work: a salary certificate or NOC with your leave dates, or your trade licence if you own a business
  • Bank statements, stamped by the bank, usually for the last three to six months
  • Travel medical insurance with at least EUR 30,000 of cover for the whole Schengen area and your whole stay, including repatriation

Documents in English generally don't need translating; the embassy can ask for German.

Visiting family or friends

An informal invitation letter from your host helps. If you can't show enough money yourself, your host can sponsor you with an Electronic Declaration of Sponsorship. They make it in person at the aliens police in Austria, where their finances are checked, and receive an eight-digit number that you give to VFS with your application. It's free, but it has to be done in Austria: a relative in the UAE can't file it for you.

Children

A child travelling without both parents needs a certified power of attorney from the parent or parents who aren't travelling.

How much money you need to show

Austria doesn't publish a daily amount. Its checklist asks only for proof that you can pay for your stay and your trip home. Figures of EUR 70 to 100 a day that appear online are agents' estimates; what matters more is a steady salary across your statements.

Fees and processing time

  • Visa fee: EUR 90 for adults and EUR 45 for children aged 6 to 11, from the Austrian foreign ministry. Children under 6 pay nothing. Some 2026 websites still show the old EUR 80.
  • VFS service charge: on top of the visa fee, reported at about AED 123. VFS shows the amount when you book, and says fees follow the exchange rate.
  • Processing: 15 calendar days once your application is complete and paid, up to 45 days when more checks are needed.

You can apply up to six months before you travel and no later than 15 days before. There is no paid fast track for the decision, and fees aren't refunded if you are refused. The Austrian embassy warns that claims you must pay a large sum for a visa are false: don't send money to anyone who offers to arrange one.

At the border

Since April 2026, Austria and every other Schengen country register non-EU visitors in the EU's Entry/Exit System. On your first trip since it started, you give fingerprints and a photo at passport control instead of getting a stamp.

Flights from the UAE

  • Emirates flies non-stop from Dubai to Vienna every day, in about six hours.
  • Etihad flies non-stop from Abu Dhabi to Vienna.
  • flydubai flies from Dubai to Salzburg; reports put it at two to four flights a week.
  • Austrian Airlines suspended its Vienna to Dubai flights in 2026 and plans to restart them on 12 December 2026, five times a week.

Flights between the UAE and Europe were disrupted for much of 2026, so check your flight with the airline before you book, and make sure the reservation you submit matches your application dates.

Planning a trip to Austria

Four days covers Vienna; a week adds Salzburg, about two and a half hours away by train, and a day in Hallstatt. Zell am See and Tyrol bring the Alps in summer and snow in winter. Munich is under two hours from Salzburg, and Budapest under three from Vienna, both in Schengen.
