Canada's visitor visa is one of the more document-heavy applications you can make from the UAE, and one of the more transparent. Nearly everything is done online, you can see exactly what is being asked, and the reasons for refusal are published rather than guessed at.

Can I apply for a Canada visa from Dubai?
Yes. UAE residents apply online to Immigration, Refugees and Citizenship Canada, then attend a visa application centre in Dubai or Abu Dhabi to give biometrics. Your nationality does not prevent you applying from here — valid UAE residence does the work.
What you are applying for is a Temporary Resident Visa, usually called a visitor visa. It covers tourism, visiting family and friends, and short business trips.
Visa or eTA — which applies to you?
A distinction worth settling first, because it changes everything.
Passport holders from visa-exempt countries — most of Europe, the UK, Australia, Japan and others — need only an eTA (Electronic Travel Authorisation) when flying to Canada. It is an online form, costs very little, and is usually approved within minutes.
Everyone else needs the full visitor visa, including Indian, Pakistani, Filipino, Sri Lankan, Bangladeshi, Egyptian and Nigerian passport holders. That is the process described here.
There is also a route worth knowing: travellers who have held a Canadian visa in the past ten years, or who currently hold a valid US non-immigrant visa, may be eligible for an eTA instead of a full visa when flying — a significant shortcut if it applies to you.
The process
- Create an online account with IRCC and complete the application.
- Upload your documents — this is the substantial part.
- Pay the visa fee and the biometrics fee.
- Attend biometrics at a visa application centre in Dubai or Abu Dhabi within the window given.
- Wait for a decision. You may be asked for a medical exam or additional documents.
- Submit your passport for visa stamping if approved.
Documents required
- Passport with adequate validity and blank pages
- UAE residence visa and Emirates ID
- Bank statements, usually six months
- Employment letter, salary certificate and NOC, or trade licence and company documents
- Proof of funds sufficient for the trip
- Travel itinerary and accommodation details
- Invitation letter if visiting family or friends, with their status in Canada
- Purpose of travel letter — a written explanation of your trip
- Proof of ties to the UAE: tenancy, employment, family, assets
- Travel history — previous passports and visas
The purpose of travel letter is worth taking seriously. It is your chance to explain in plain language who you are, why you are going, how long for, who is paying and what you are returning to. A clear letter resolves questions an officer would otherwise have to resolve against you.
How long does it take?
Canada publishes live processing times by country of application, and they move considerably — visitor visa processing from the UAE has ranged from a few weeks to several months depending on volumes.
Check the published estimate for the UAE when you apply, and treat it as an estimate rather than a commitment. Apply well ahead, and do not book non-refundable travel before you have a decision.
What it costs
Two separate fees: the visitor visa application fee and the biometrics fee. Both are in Canadian dollars, both are non-refundable regardless of outcome, and there may be a visa application centre service charge on top. A family applying together pays per person, though a family biometrics cap may apply.
Confirm current amounts when you apply — they are revised periodically and the dirham cost moves with the exchange rate.
Why applications are refused
Canada states its refusal reasons, and they recur:
- Insufficient ties to your country of residence — the officer is not satisfied you will leave
- Financial capacity not demonstrated for the trip as described
- Purpose of visit not clearly established
- Travel history too limited to assess
- Inconsistencies between the forms, the letter and the documents
Notice that four of the five are about documentation rather than eligibility. Most refusals we see are avoidable — the applicant qualified but did not evidence it.
