The UAE runs one of the more generous entry systems in the region — but "generous" is not the same as "simple". Whether you need a visa at all, whether you can get one on arrival, and how long it takes depends almost entirely on which passport you hold.

Do I need a visa for the UAE?
It depends on your nationality, and travellers fall into three broad groups:
1. Visa-free entry
Citizens of the other GCC states — Saudi Arabia, Kuwait, Bahrain, Oman and Qatar — do not need a visa to enter the UAE.
2. Visa on arrival
A substantial list of nationalities can obtain an entry permit at the airport with no advance application. This group includes most European Union and Schengen states, the United Kingdom, the United States, Canada, Australia, New Zealand, Japan, South Korea, Singapore, Malaysia and China, among others. The permitted stay varies by nationality — commonly 30 or 90 days.
3. Pre-arranged visa required
Everyone else applies before travelling. This includes India, Pakistan, Bangladesh, the Philippines, Sri Lanka, Nepal, Egypt, Nigeria, Kenya and South Africa, among many others.
There is an important sub-case here that saves a lot of people money. Indian passport holders who already hold a valid US visa, US green card, UK residence permit or EU residence permit have historically been able to obtain a UAE visa on arrival rather than applying in advance. UAE visa types
The main tourist and visit categories are:
- 48-hour and 96-hour transit visas — for travellers connecting through the UAE who want to leave the airport. The 48-hour permit is often issued free of charge by the airline.
- 30-day tourist visa — single or multiple entry, the standard short holiday visa.
- 60-day tourist visa — single or multiple entry, for longer stays and family visits.
- Multi-year multiple-entry visit visas — five-year options exist for frequent visitors.
- Residence visas — employment, investor, property, student, family sponsorship, and the long-term Golden and Green visas.
Most tourist visas can be extended once inside the country, but extension rules and costs differ by visa type — ask before you assume, because overstaying carries a daily fine.
The passport rules that catch people out
Two rules account for a large share of avoidable problems:
The six-month rule. Your passport must generally be valid for at least six months from your date of entry. This is checked at the airline counter as well as at immigration, and airlines routinely deny boarding on it. If your passport expires in five months, renew it before you travel — no visa will rescue you at the gate.
Blank pages. You need clear pages for stamps. A passport that is technically valid but full can still cause trouble.
How long does a UAE visa take?
For a pre-arranged tourist visa, processing is typically measured in working days rather than weeks — often around three to five, and sometimes faster. Applications can take longer when:
- Documents are unclear, low-resolution or inconsistent
- The photograph does not meet specification
- Names do not match exactly across passport, application and supporting documents
- There is a prior UAE immigration record requiring review
- You apply across a public holiday period
The recurring theme is document quality. A blurred passport scan is the single most common cause of a delayed UAE visa, and it is entirely preventable.
How to check your UAE visa status
Once an application is submitted you can track it. You will generally need either your application or reference number, or your passport number together with your nationality.

What you will need to apply
For a standard tourist visa:
- A clear colour scan of your passport bio page, valid six months beyond entry
- A recent passport-size photograph against a white background
- Confirmed return or onward flight details
- Accommodation details for your stay
- For some nationalities, a sponsor in the UAE — a hotel, a tour operator or a resident family member
Requirements vary by nationality and visa type. Additional documents such as bank statements or an employment letter may be requested.

Frequently asked questions
Can I go to the UAE without a visa?
Only if you are a GCC citizen. Many other nationalities can get a visa on arrival, which is not the same as visa-free — you still receive an entry permit at the airport. Everyone else must arrange a visa before travelling.
