Slovenia Visa from Dubai: Apply at the Abu Dhabi Embassy, Fees and Documents

Emiratis need no visa; most expat residents apply in person at the Embassy of the Republic of Slovenia in Abu Dhabi, which decides every case itself. The EUR 90 fee paid in dirhams, the certified invitation-letter rule, and realistic timelines.

The short answer: Emiratis don't need a visa for Slovenia: they can stay up to 90 days in any 180. Indian, Pakistani, Filipino, Egyptian, Bangladeshi and Sri Lankan nationals living in the UAE need a Schengen visa. You apply in person, by appointment, at the Embassy of the Republic of Slovenia in Abu Dhabi, which decides the application itself; its visa page names no outsourced visa centre in the UAE. The visa fee is EUR 90 for adults, paid in dirhams at the exchange rate on the day, because the embassy's page gives fees in euros only. Processing takes at least 15 calendar days, and the checklist accepts three months of bank statements.

Lake Bled's island church and castle above the water, Ljubljana's dragon bridge and hilltop castle, the Julian Alps around Triglav, and the short stretch of coast at Piran are why most UAE residents go. Slovenia issues Schengen visas itself, so a Slovenian visa also covers the other Schengen countries, as long as Slovenia is your main destination.

Who needs a visa for Slovenia

Whether you need a visa depends on your passport. UAE citizens have been able to visit Slovenia and the rest of the Schengen area without a visa since May 2015. They will need the EU's ETIAS travel authorisation once it starts; it hasn't yet, and the EU says it will announce the date several months ahead.

Indian, Pakistani, Filipino, Egyptian, Bangladeshi and Sri Lankan nationals need a Schengen visa, and so do most other nationalities living in the UAE. EU rules say you apply in the country where you legally live, so UAE residents apply in the UAE, not at home.

Apply to Slovenia if it is your main destination, where you spend the most nights. Four nights in Ljubljana and at Lake Bled and two in Venice is a Slovenian application; the reverse is an Italian one. See our Schengen visa guide for how the rule works.

Slovenia has been a full Schengen member since 21 December 2007. The embassy's page says Slovenian missions issue short-stay visas themselves, and that another Schengen state can issue a Slovenian visa only where Slovenia has signed a representation agreement with it. For the UAE, the embassy's own list of application locations names only itself, in Abu Dhabi: it does not name VFS Global or any other provider, and it does not list a representation arrangement with another country for the UAE the way it does for Bahrain, Kuwait and Qatar.

How to apply from Dubai or Abu Dhabi

  1. Fill in the Schengen application form (the embassy's page links a PDF version), then print and sign it. Each person named in a passport, including a child, needs their own signed form; a parent or guardian signs for a minor.
  2. Email the consular section at consular.abudhabi@gov.si to book an appointment. The embassy's page gives no online booking system and names no visa centre, so an appointment by email is the route for every emirate.
  3. Attend in person at the embassy, 12-01 Office Tower, Capital Plaza, Khalifa Street, Corniche, Abu Dhabi. You hand in your documents, give all ten fingerprints for the EU's Visa Information System unless you're exempt, and pay the fee in dirhams, by cash or card.
  4. Wait at least 15 calendar days. The embassy decides the application itself; there is no separate authority to forward it to.

The embassy names no other place to apply in the UAE, so residents of Dubai, Sharjah and the other emirates apply in Abu Dhabi too. The consular section sees visitors by appointment, Monday to Thursday from 10am to 12:30pm and 3pm to 4pm, and Friday from 10am to 12pm.

Documents

The embassy's page points to the European Commission's harmonised list of supporting documents for short-stay visa applicants in the UAE. For a tourist trip, it asks for:

  • The signed application form
  • Passport with at least two blank pages, issued within the last ten years, valid at least three months after you leave the Schengen area
  • UAE residence visa valid at least three months after you return; GCC nationals can use their ID card instead
  • One recent photo, ICAO-compliant, no older than six months
  • A letter from your employer stating your position, length of contract and salary, or an original trade licence if you're self-employed
  • Proof of accommodation: a hotel booking for your whole stay, proof of a rental or property you own in Slovenia, or confirmation from the host covering your costs
  • Verifiable means of subsistence: payslips, a valid international credit card with bank statements, bank account statements for the last three months, or a sponsorship and accommodation form
  • Travel medical insurance with at least EUR 30,000 of cover for the whole Schengen area, including repatriation
  • Return flight reservation and a copy
  • A full travel itinerary

Visiting family or friends

Your host in Slovenia writes a guarantee or invitation letter stating how much of your stay they're covering. The embassy's page is specific about one extra step most other Schengen missions don't ask for: the letter must be certified and registered at the administrative unit (upravna enota) responsible for the host's address in Slovenia before you submit it.

Children

Bring the child's birth certificate and a copy of both parents' passports. A minor travelling without both parents needs an original authorisation signed by the absent parent or legal guardian in front of a visa officer, or a duly legalised equivalent, plus a copy of that parent's or guardian's passport. Every child named in a passport, including an infant, needs their own signed application form.

How much money you need to show

Slovenia doesn't publish a daily amount for UAE applicants. The checklist accepts payslips, a valid credit card with bank statements, three months of bank account statements, or a sponsorship form from a host, so a steady income or a committed host matters more than one month's balance.

Fees and processing time

  • Visa fee: EUR 90 for adults and EUR 45 for children aged 6 to 11, the Schengen-wide fee since June 2024. Children under 6 pay nothing. The embassy's page says consular fees are paid "in dirham (AED) in cash or by card," but it gives no dirham figure, so the amount follows the exchange rate on the day. Confirm it when you book your appointment.
  • Service charge: none listed. You apply at the embassy itself, not through an outsourcing provider, so you pay the visa fee directly to the embassy.
  • Processing: lodge your application at least 15 calendar days before you travel, and up to six months before (nine months for seafarers). Applications lodged closer to departure may still be accepted, but the embassy's page says a decision can take up to 15 calendar days. Under the EU Visa Code, that can extend to 45 days in individual cases.

If you're refused, the embassy's own page does not set out an appeal procedure for Abu Dhabi. Other Slovenian missions, including the embassy in London, publish an 8-day deadline from the refusal notice and a EUR 153 appeal fee, sent in writing, in Slovene, to the mission that refused you. Ask the Abu Dhabi embassy for its procedure before you rely on these figures.

At the border

Since April 2026, Slovenia and every other Schengen country register non-EU visitors in the EU's Entry/Exit System. On your first trip since it started, you give fingerprints and a photo at passport control instead of getting a stamp.

Flights from the UAE

  • flydubai flies non-stop from Dubai to Ljubljana, and Emirates sells seats on the same flights under its own code. The number of flights a week has varied in 2026, so check the current timetable with flydubai or Emirates before you book.

From Abu Dhabi or Sharjah, you connect through Dubai or a European hub. Flights between the UAE and Europe were disrupted for much of 2026, so check your flight with the airline before you book, and make sure the reservation you submit matches your application dates.

Frequently asked questions

Where do I apply for a Slovenia visa from Dubai?

Directly at the Embassy of the Republic of Slovenia in Abu Dhabi, by appointment. The embassy names no visa centre in Dubai, so Dubai and Sharjah residents apply in Abu Dhabi too.

Does Slovenia have a VFS Global centre in the UAE?

The embassy's visa page names no VFS Global, BLS or other outsourced centre for the UAE. It lists the embassy in Abu Dhabi as the place to submit a short-stay application, by appointment booked by email.

How much is the Slovenia visa fee in Dubai?

EUR 90 for adults and EUR 45 for children aged 6 to 11. The embassy takes payment in dirhams at the exchange rate on the day and doesn't publish an AED figure, so confirm the amount when you book.

How long does a Slovenia visa take from the UAE?

Allow at least 15 calendar days. The embassy asks you to apply at least 15 days before you travel and up to six months ahead, and a decision can take longer in individual cases.

What documents do I need for a Slovenia visa from the UAE?

Your passport, application form, a recent photo, proof of funds (payslips, bank statements or a credit card), proof of accommodation, an employer letter or trade licence, travel insurance of at least EUR 30,000, and a return flight reservation. A private visit also needs a host's invitation letter certified and registered at a Slovenian administrative unit.

No. UAE citizens can visit Slovenia without a visa for up to 90 days in any 180. They will need an ETIAS travel authorisation once the EU starts it.

Planning a trip to Slovenia

Three days covers Ljubljana's old town and castle, with a day trip to Lake Bled. A week adds Lake Bohinj and the Julian Alps, or Piran and the short Adriatic coast. Venice and Trieste are both within a few hours by road, and in Schengen too, so one visa covers both. See our Schengen visa services for help preparing your Slovenia application, browse holiday packages, or talk to us about flights and hotels.
