The short answer: Emiratis don't need a visa for Liechtenstein: they can stay up to 90 days in any 180. Indian, Pakistani, Filipino, Egyptian, Bangladeshi and Sri Lankan nationals living in the UAE need a Schengen visa. Liechtenstein has no embassy in the UAE, so Switzerland decides on its behalf: you apply at VFS Global in Dubai or Abu Dhabi, and the Embassy of Switzerland in Abu Dhabi makes the decision, for Switzerland and Liechtenstein alike. The government visa fee is AED 365 for adults; VFS adds its own charge, which isn't published. Processing usually takes 15 calendar days, and the checklist asks for three months of bank statements.

Vaduz Castle above the vineyards, the Känzile viewpoint over the Rhine valley, the prince's wine cellars at the Hofkellerei, and the quiet ski and hiking village of Malbun are why UAE residents go. Liechtenstein is a Schengen member, so a Liechtenstein visa, issued through Switzerland, also covers the other Schengen countries, as long as Liechtenstein is your main destination.

Who needs a visa for Liechtenstein

Whether you need a visa depends on your passport. UAE citizens have been able to visit Liechtenstein and the rest of the Schengen area without a visa since May 2015. Emiratis will need the EU's ETIAS travel authorisation once it starts; it hasn't yet, and the EU says it will announce the date several months ahead.

Indian, Pakistani, Filipino, Egyptian, Bangladeshi and Sri Lankan nationals need a Schengen visa, and so do most other nationalities living in the UAE. EU rules say you apply in the country where you legally live, so UAE residents apply in the UAE, not at home.

Apply through the Embassy of Switzerland if Switzerland or Liechtenstein is your main destination, where you spend the most nights. Two nights in Vaduz and Malbun and four nights in Zurich and Lucerne is still a Switzerland or Liechtenstein application, decided by the same embassy; three nights in Vaduz and four nights in Innsbruck is an Austrian application instead. See our Schengen visa guide for how the rule works.

Liechtenstein has embassies in only a handful of countries, and the UAE isn't one of them. Since the principality joined Schengen in full in December 2011, Swiss embassies have issued Schengen visas on Liechtenstein's behalf wherever it has no mission of its own, and the UAE is one of those places. The Embassy of Switzerland in Abu Dhabi even lists Liechtenstein passports and ID cards among its counter services. The Embassy of Switzerland in Abu Dhabi's visa section takes applications from permanent residents of the UAE and Bahrain whose main destination is Switzerland or Liechtenstein, and turns away requests naming any other country as the main destination.

How to apply from Dubai or Abu Dhabi

  1. Fill in the Schengen application form, downloaded from Switzerland's State Secretariat for Migration (SEM) website, then print and sign it. For a child under 18, both parents sign, or the absent parent gives a signed letter of agreement with a copy of their passport.
  2. Book an appointment on VFS Global's Switzerland site for the UAE. There's no separate Liechtenstein booking category: the embassy's visa section files Liechtenstein applications the same way, through the same VFS centres.
  3. Attend your appointment at a VFS Global visa centre in Dubai or Abu Dhabi. You hand in your documents, give fingerprints unless you gave them for a Schengen visa in the last 59 months, and pay the government visa fee in AED plus VFS's own service charge.
  4. Allow at least 15 calendar days. VFS forwards your file to the Embassy of Switzerland in Abu Dhabi, which decides.

Family-reunion and dependent-family visas need a direct, in-person appointment at the embassy rather than at VFS, booked only by email to abudhabi.visa@eda.admin.ch. Everyone else, including most UAE residents applying for a holiday, uses VFS Global.

Documents

The Embassy of Switzerland's tourist checklist for UAE and Bahrain residents asks for:

  • The signed application form
  • Passport, original, with the holder's signature, at least two blank pages, issued within the last ten years, and valid at least three months after you leave the Schengen area
  • One recent photo, 3.5 by 4.5 cm, light background, no older than six months, glued to the form
  • UAE or Bahrain residence permit valid at least three months after you leave; GCC nationals can submit their ID card instead
  • Proof of accommodation for every night of your trip: a hotel booking, a rental contract, or proof of a property you own
  • Return flight reservation and a copy
  • Travel medical insurance with at least EUR 30,000 of cover for the whole Schengen area and your whole stay, including repatriation
  • Financial means: payslips, or a valid international credit card with bank statements, or three months of bank account statements, or a sponsorship and accommodation form
  • A letter from your employer, on letterhead with contact details, stamped, naming your position, joining date, salary and approved leave dates, and confirming your job continues after the trip; or your original trade licence if you're self-employed. If your sponsor isn't a well-known Swiss or multinational company, add hotel confirmation, your trade licence, and three months of bank statements too.
  • All documents in English, translated into English, or in German, French or Italian

Spouses and children of Swiss or EU/EFTA nationals skip the accommodation, flight, insurance, financial-means and employer-letter items; instead they submit a copy of the Swiss or EU/EFTA passport and proof of the family relationship, such as a marriage or birth certificate.

Visiting family or friends

Your host writes an invitation letter in German, French or Italian; there's no fixed template, but it must name both of you, your dates of birth, addresses and nationalities, state that the host expects you, and say so if the host is covering your travel, accommodation or food. At its discretion, after a positive preliminary review, the embassy can also issue a guarantee form, which you forward yourself to your host; your host's cantonal migration office then reviews it, so start well before you book flights.

Children

Bring the child's birth certificate and copies of both parents' passports. A minor travelling without both parents needs an original authorisation, signed by the absent parent or legal guardian in front of a visa officer, or a notarised equivalent, plus a copy of that parent's or guardian's passport.

How much money you need to show

Switzerland doesn't publish a daily amount for UAE or Bahrain applicants travelling to Switzerland or Liechtenstein. The checklist accepts payslips, a credit card with statements, three months of bank statements, or a sponsorship form instead, so a steady income matters more than one month's balance.

Fees and processing time

FeeAmount
Visa fee, adultsAED 365 (EUR 90)
Visa fee, children aged 6 to 11AED 180 (EUR 45)
Visa fee, children under 6Free
VFS service charge, every applicantNot published; paid directly to VFS at the centre

The AED 365 and AED 180 figures are the Embassy of Switzerland's own counter prices for the UAE and Bahrain, effective from 5 October 2026; it says they can change with the exchange rate. VFS's own charge is separate and the embassy's page doesn't give an amount, so confirm it when you book. No fee is refunded if you're refused. You can apply up to six months before you travel, and no later than 15 days before; the embassy says processing can be extended in individual cases, so apply early.

If you're refused, you can appeal within 30 days of the refusal notice. Write to the Embassy of Switzerland in Abu Dhabi, which decided your case, or directly to Switzerland's State Secretariat for Migration (SEM) in Bern, in a signed and dated letter in German, French or Italian, or in English with a translation. The embassy's own price list sets the appeal's advance administrative fee at CHF 200, AED 885, refunded only if SEM rules in your favour.

At the border

Since April 2026, Switzerland and every other Schengen country register non-EU visitors in the EU's Entry/Exit System. Liechtenstein has no external Schengen border of its own and no border checks with Switzerland, so this registration happens where you enter the Schengen area, usually Zurich, not once you cross into Liechtenstein. On your first trip since it started, you give fingerprints and a photo at passport control instead of getting a stamp.

Flights from the UAE

  • Emirates flies non-stop from Dubai to Zurich.
  • Swiss, which had paused the route, said it would resume daily non-stop flights between Zurich and Dubai in late October 2026.

Liechtenstein has no airport of its own. Zurich is the usual gateway, about 115 to 130 km from Vaduz, roughly an hour and a half by road, or by train to Sargans or Buchs and then a bus into Liechtenstein. From Abu Dhabi or Sharjah, you connect through Dubai or a European hub. Flights between the UAE and Europe were disrupted for much of 2026, so check your flight with the airline before you book, and make sure the reservation you submit matches your application dates.

Frequently asked questions

Where do I apply for a Liechtenstein visa in Dubai?

At VFS Global's visa centre in Dubai or Abu Dhabi. The Embassy of Switzerland in Abu Dhabi decides, because Liechtenstein has no embassy in the UAE.

Does Liechtenstein have an embassy in the UAE?

No. Switzerland represents Liechtenstein for Schengen visas everywhere Liechtenstein has no mission of its own. In the UAE, that's the Embassy of Switzerland in Abu Dhabi.

How much is the Liechtenstein visa fee from Dubai?

AED 365 for adults and AED 180 for children aged 6 to 11, the Embassy of Switzerland's own counter price as of 5 October 2026. VFS adds its own service charge, which isn't published; children under 6 pay no visa fee.

How long does a Liechtenstein visa take from Dubai?

Usually 15 calendar days, according to the Embassy of Switzerland, which says this can be extended in individual cases. Apply up to six months before you travel and no later than 15 days before.

Do Emiratis need a visa for Liechtenstein?

No. UAE citizens can visit Liechtenstein without a visa for up to 90 days in any 180. They will need an ETIAS travel authorisation once the EU starts it.

How do I get to Liechtenstein from Dubai?

Liechtenstein has no airport. Fly from Dubai to Zurich, non-stop on Emirates (Swiss plans to restart its own flights in late October 2026), then drive or take the train to Sargans or Buchs and a bus on to Vaduz, a trip of around an hour and a half from the airport.

Planning a trip to Liechtenstein

A day covers Vaduz: the castle grounds and the Känzile viewpoint on foot, the National Museum, and a tasting at the Hofkellerei among the vineyards below the castle, booked ahead. A second day adds Malbun, about 20 to 30 minutes from the capital, for hiking in summer or quiet slopes in winter. Zurich is under two hours away and in Schengen too, so one visa covers both.
