The short answer: under the UAE's unified school calendar, the 2026–27 winter break runs from Monday 14 December 2026 to Sunday 3 January 2027, 21 days off school, with classes resuming on Monday 4 January 2027. The same window applies to KHDA's Dubai private schools (both April-start and September-start), Sharjah's SPEA calendar and the Abu Dhabi schools ADEK regulates, including most CBSE and other Indian-curriculum schools in Dubai. New Year's Day falls inside the break; National Day (2–3 December) falls about two weeks before it starts. Book flights and visas now: fares and hotel rates typically rise fastest around 19–20 December and again for the 2–3 January return rush, and a Schengen appointment from Dubai can take weeks to secure before processing even begins.

When exactly is the UAE winter break in 2026-27?
The Ministry of Education's unified calendar, which both KHDA (Dubai) and SPEA (Sharjah) use as the basis for their own school calendars, sets the 2026–27 winter break at 14 December 2026 to 3 January 2027, with pupils back in class on 4 January 2027. That is a week shorter than the four-week break UAE schools had in 2025–26; the ministry's own three-year plan holds the winter holiday at three weeks through at least 2028–29.
Abu Dhabi, where ADEK approves each school's calendar, is reported to follow the same start and return dates. One ADEK-approved school we checked lists its own break ending a day earlier, on 1 January, with Term 2 starting on 4 January regardless. The gap is small, but check your child's own school calendar rather than relying on the general figure if you are booking a flight right at the edge of the break.
Does every curriculum follow the same dates?
Mostly, yes, for 2026–27. Dubai's April-start private schools, which cover most CBSE, ICSE and other Indian-curriculum campuses, now follow the same window as the September-start calendar: winter break from 14 December 2026 to 4 January 2027, according to KHDA's published calendar for both tracks. That is worth noting if you travelled before on an Indian-curriculum school's older, separately timed break.
British-curriculum and IB schools in Dubai, Abu Dhabi and Sharjah also sit on the unified calendar's winter dates, since KHDA, ADEK and SPEA apply the same ministry framework to the schools each regulates. The exception SPEA names explicitly is Sharjah's own Indian- and Pakistani-curriculum private schools, which run a separate academic year under their own timing; if your child is at one of these, check with the school directly rather than assuming the 14 December start. A school can also add staff development days or a staggered reopening, so confirm against your own school's calendar before booking a non-refundable flight.
The rest of the calendar: spring break and the holidays either side
Two more dates matter if you are planning the school year around breaks, not just December.
| Break | 2026–27 dates |
|---|---|
| Winter break | 14 December 2026 – 3 January 2027 |
| Spring break (end of Term 2) | Around 5–11 April 2027 for most Dubai and MOE schools, back on 12 April; Sharjah's SPEA calendar runs a shorter 5–8 April |
| Academic year ends | 2 July 2027 (Dubai, September-start); 1 July 2027 (Sharjah, SPEA) |
Either side of the winter break, two public holidays affect travel plans. UAE National Day, with Commemoration Day on 1 December and National Day on 2–3 December 2026, falls about two weeks before term ends, so it is a separate short break rather than an extension of the winter holiday; see our UAE National Day holiday guide if you are planning around that weekend too. New Year's Day, on 1 January 2027, falls inside the winter break itself, which is one reason escorted tours over the period are priced and timed as single Christmas-and-New-Year departures rather than two separate trips; see our New Year holiday in the UAE guide for the public-holiday side of it.
When flights and hotels get expensive
Demand for flights and hotel rooms moves with the school calendar. The days immediately before the break starts, typically around 19–20 December, and the return rush around 2–3 January, are when fares and room rates tend to climb fastest, since most UAE families with school-age children are trying to travel on the same few days. If your dates are flexible, flying out in the first days of the break, from 14 December, or returning a day or two before school resumes on 4 January, usually costs less than travelling on the peak weekends either side.
The same logic applies to escorted tours and packages: departures dated for Christmas Day or New Year's Eve sell out earliest and cost the most, while a departure a few days either side of those dates on the same itinerary can be available for less.
Visa lead times before you book
If your trip needs a visa, start now rather than in November. Schengen appointments from Dubai are the tighter constraint: VFS Global's own Dubai capacity has risen, but demand from UAE residents is reported to be rising faster, and one visa-management consultancy put the wait for a Schengen appointment slot at several popular embassies at two to three months in mid-2026. Once you do get an appointment, processing itself usually takes about 15 calendar days, though it varies by nationality. See our Schengen visa for UAE residents guide and zero-cost Schengen appointment page for how we help with both the appointment and the application.
A UK visa is comparatively more predictable: standard processing is about three weeks (15 working days) from your VFS biometrics appointment, with paid Priority (5 working days) and Super Priority (next working day) options where available. See UK visa services for how we handle the application.
Where to go: snow, markets, warmth and short-haul
Snow, about 4 to 10 hours away
For snow without a long flight, Georgia is the closest option: Tbilisi is about 4 hours from Dubai on Emirates or flydubai, and the Gudauri ski resort is roughly 120 km, about 2 hours by road, north of the city, with a season that normally runs December to mid-April and January–February as the snowiest months. Switzerland is about 7 hours away on Emirates or SWISS to Zurich; see our dedicated Switzerland trip from Dubai guide for flights, visas and costs. For deeper snow further out, Japan has no direct flight to Hokkaido: the practical route is Emirates non-stop to Tokyo, about 10 hours, then a domestic flight on to Sapporo, about 1.5 hours, so budget 13 to 14 hours door to door. See our best time to visit Japan guide.
Christmas markets, about 6.5 to 7.5 hours away
Germany, Austria, the Czech Republic, Poland, Hungary and Slovakia all run Christmas markets through December, and all sit roughly 6.5 to 7.5 hours from Dubai on Emirates, flydubai or a connecting European carrier. These are the countries behind the Christmas and New Year escorted tours below, and the markets themselves typically run into the week before Christmas, so a mid-December departure catches them in full swing.
Warm escapes, about 4 to 9 hours away
If you would rather trade winter for sun, the Maldives (Malé, about 4 hours 10 minutes on Emirates) and Sri Lanka (Colombo, about 4.5 hours) are the shortest warm options; see our best time to visit the Maldives guide and best time to visit Sri Lanka guide. Thailand (Bangkok, about 6.5 hours on Emirates) and Bali (Denpasar, about 9 hours 15 minutes on Emirates' non-stop) take longer but are still a single flight, and both run dry, warm weather through December.
Short-haul and visa-easy, about 2.5 to 4 hours away
Armenia, Azerbaijan and Uzbekistan are the quickest options on this list: Yerevan is about 3.5 hours on flydubai, Baku about 2.5 to 3 hours, and Tashkent about 3.5 hours, all shorter than the flight to the Maldives. Entry rules vary by nationality and change from time to time, so check our Armenia visa guide, Azerbaijan visa guide and Uzbekistan visa guide before you book.

Frequently asked questions
When exactly does the UAE winter break start and end in 2026-27?
It runs from Monday 14 December 2026 to Sunday 3 January 2027, with classes resuming Monday 4 January 2027, under the Ministry of Education's unified calendar used by KHDA, SPEA and ADEK-regulated schools.
Do all schools in the UAE have the same winter break?
Nearly all do for 2026-27, including April-start Indian-curriculum schools in Dubai. The main exception is Sharjah's own Indian- and Pakistani-curriculum private schools, which run a separate academic year under SPEA. Always check your own school's calendar.
Is Christmas Day a public holiday in the UAE?
No. The UAE's public holidays around this period are National Day (2–3 December) and New Year's Day (1 January); Christmas Day itself is not a UAE public holiday, though it falls inside the school winter break.
How far ahead should I book flights for the December UAE school holidays?
As early as you can. Fares and hotel rates tend to rise fastest around 19–20 December and again for the 2–3 January return, so booking in October or early November, and applying for any visa even earlier, usually costs less and avoids the worst of the Schengen appointment backlog.
How long does a Schengen visa take from Dubai in December?
Processing itself is usually about 15 calendar days, but getting an appointment slot is the bigger constraint; one visa-management firm estimated waits of two to three months for several popular embassies in mid-2026. Apply as soon as your travel dates are fixed.
Where can UAE residents find snow without a long flight?
Georgia is the closest, with Tbilisi about 4 hours from Dubai and the Gudauri ski resort around 2 hours further by road. Switzerland is about 7 hours away by direct flight to Zurich.
