The short answer: New Year's Day, 1 January 2027, falls on a Friday and is a paid public holiday for both the public and private sectors in the UAE. Because it lands at the end of the working week, it runs straight into the weekend, giving most residents a three-day break from Friday 1 to Sunday 3 January, with work resuming on Monday 4 January 2027. No Cabinet transfer is expected or needed this time, since the holiday already sits next to the weekend rather than in the middle of it. It also falls inside the school winter break, so most children are already off.

Is 1 January 2027 definitely a public holiday?

Yes. New Year's Day is on the UAE's standing list of fixed public holidays, alongside National Day, because it runs on the Gregorian calendar and does not depend on moon sighting the way the Islamic holidays do. Both government and private-sector employers observe it as a single paid day off. A calendar check confirms the weekday: 1 January 2027 is a Friday.

As with any public holiday, a formal MOHRE circular for the private sector, and official confirmation of the full 2027 holiday list, typically follows closer to the date rather than a year ahead. Treat 1 January as settled on the Gregorian basis, and check for the formal circular nearer the end of 2026.

What the Friday date means for your weekend

Government staff normally work a half-day on Friday morning, with the weekend beginning Friday afternoon. Because 1 January is a full public holiday, government employees get the whole of Friday off, running straight into Saturday and Sunday for a three-day break. Private-sector staff, most of whom already follow a Saturday–Sunday weekend, get the same three days, Friday to Sunday.

Cabinet Resolution No. 27 of 2024 lets the Government move some midweek public holidays to the start or end of the week. New Year's Day 2027 does not need that treatment: it already falls at the very end of the working week, immediately next to the weekend, so no transfer is expected. That is a contrast with the less convenient midweek dates in nearby years.

How 2027 compares with recent years

  • 2025: 1 January fell on a Wednesday, a single midweek day off with no automatic long weekend.
  • 2026: 1 January fell on a Thursday, again midweek, though MOHRE confirmed it as a paid day for private-sector staff with work resuming the Friday.
  • 2027: 1 January falls on a Friday, giving the longest New Year break of the three without anyone needing to take annual leave.

New Year's Day pay for private-sector staff

If you are simply off on 1 January, it is a normal paid public holiday, nothing further to calculate. If your employer asks you to work that day, Article 28 of Federal Decree-Law No. 33 of 2021 entitles you to either a replacement rest day or your normal daily wage plus a premium of at least 50% of your basic wage for that day. This is the same rule that applies to every UAE public holiday, regardless of role or grade, once the employer has required the work. Agree which option applies before the day, and raise it with MOHRE if neither appears on your payslip afterwards.

The school winter break overlaps New Year's Day

Under the Ministry of Education's unified academic calendar, the winter break runs from 14 December 2026 to 3 January 2027, with classes resuming on Monday 4 January 2027. New Year's Day sits inside that break rather than standing alone, so most school-age children already have the day off as part of roughly three weeks away from school. KHDA-regulated schools in Dubai generally follow the same MOE dates for the main breaks, though always confirm with your own school, since some curricula vary slightly. For the full winter break picture, including half-term and how families are using the longer window, see our UAE winter break guide.

New Year's Eve in Dubai, briefly

Dubai's New Year's Eve plan is published only a week or two ahead each year, so treat this as the usual pattern rather than the confirmed arrangements for 31 December 2026. In recent years the RTA has run the Metro through the night, phased road closures around Downtown Dubai have begun in the mid-to-late afternoon, and the main event has been the midnight fireworks and light show at the Burj Khalifa, with further displays at other waterfront locations across the city. If you are heading to Downtown, arrive well before 4pm and use the Metro or a taxi rather than driving, since the roads around Burj Khalifa and Dubai Mall close early and parking fills up fast. Our booking site covers tickets and viewing spots for the night itself; this guide is about the holiday and the days around it.

Visa lead times to watch in December

December is a popular month to travel, and visa appointments for longer trips can fill up ahead of the holidays. Schengen processing commonly runs 15 to 30 days in peak season already, and can take longer when a consulate is under load, so start a Schengen application for a December or early-January departure as soon as your tour or flights are booked; our Schengen visa for UAE residents guide covers the full process, and our zero-cost Schengen appointment service can help with the booking itself. UK visas typically take about three weeks from your biometrics appointment, so the same advice applies; see UK visa services.

Frequently asked questions

Is 1 January a public holiday in the UAE?

Yes. New Year's Day is a fixed public holiday for both the public and private sectors. In 2027 it falls on a Friday, so it runs straight into the weekend.

Will there be a long weekend for New Year 2027?

Yes, a three-day weekend from Friday 1 to Sunday 3 January 2027, with work resuming on Monday 4 January. No further Cabinet transfer is expected, since the holiday already sits at the end of the week.

Do private-sector employees get extra pay for working on New Year's Day?

If your employer asks you to work on 1 January, UAE Labour Law entitles you to either a replacement day off or your normal pay plus at least a 50% premium on your basic wage for that day, under Article 28 of Federal Decree-Law No. 33 of 2021.

Does New Year's Day fall during the school winter break?

Yes. The Ministry of Education's winter break runs from 14 December 2026 to 3 January 2027, so 1 January sits inside it rather than standing alone for most school-age children.

Where can I go for a 3-day New Year weekend from Dubai?

Oman, Qatar and Bahrain are all under an hour and a half away by air, and Saudi Arabia and Egypt are reachable in two to four hours, which makes any of them workable for a Friday-to-Sunday break.

How far ahead should I book a Schengen or UK visa for a December trip?

As early as you can. Schengen processing commonly runs 15 to 30 days in peak season, and UK visas about three weeks from biometrics, so book your appointment as soon as your travel dates are fixed.

Last checked 9 October 2026 against the UAE Government portal (u.ae), the Ministry of Human Resources and Emiratisation's labour law guidance, the Ministry of Education's 2026–27 academic calendar, and RTA and Dubai Media Office reporting on past New Year's Eve transport plans. The 2027 holiday list, visa fees and the New Year's Eve traffic plan can all change closer to the date, so confirm before you book leave, flights or visas.
