The short answer: the direct bus from Dubai to Muscat is run by Al Khanjry Transport, several times a day, for about AED 100 one way, and takes six to seven hours including the border. Driving takes four and a half to six hours on the Hatta–Al Wajajah crossing. Either way you need an Oman visa (or a passport that does not need one), your passport and Emirates ID, and AED 35 per person for the UAE exit fee. The RTA's own Dubai–Muscat bus has been suspended since 2020, and the UAE–Oman railway is still being built.

Dubai to Oman by bus

Who runs it. The Dubai–Muscat route is operated by Al Khanjry Transport, an Omani coach company, with several departures a day from Dubai to Ruwi in Muscat. Tickets are sold on its official booking site, alkhanjryonline.com, where you can check the day's departure times and the pick-up point in Dubai.

What it costs. About AED 100 one way, with returns a little under twice that, according to 2026 fares. The UAE exit fee of AED 35 is paid separately at the border.

How long it takes. Six to seven hours. The driving is about five hours; the rest is the border, where everyone leaves the bus for UAE exit and Omani entry.

What about the RTA bus? Dubai's RTA and Oman's Mwasalat launched a joint Dubai–Muscat service in 2019. It was suspended in 2020 and had not resumed when we checked in October 2026, so guides that quote its old AED 55 fare are out of date.

What to carry on the bus

  • Your passport, valid for at least six months, and your Emirates ID
  • Your approved Oman visa as a printout or PDF, unless your passport is visa-free for Oman
  • A card or cash for the AED 35 exit fee
  • Your return ticket and hotel booking, which Omani immigration may ask to see

Dubai to Oman by car

Which border to use

  • Hatta–Al Wajajah: the usual crossing from Dubai to Muscat, about 450 km door to door
  • Khatmat Malaha: south of Kalba on the east coast; handy from Sharjah and the northern emirates for Sohar and the Batinah coast
  • Mezyad–Hafeet: near Al Ain; suits drivers from Abu Dhabi heading for Ibri or Nizwa
  • Al Darah (Tibat): north of Ras Al Khaimah, for Khasab and Musandam only

Paperwork for the car

  • Insurance valid in Oman. Your UAE policy may already include Oman cover; check with your insurer and carry the certificate (the "orange card"). If not, buy short-term Omani third-party insurance at the border before entry.
  • Car registration (mulkiya) in your name. If the car is financed or belongs to your company, carry a letter of permission from the bank or the company.
  • Rental cars need written permission from the rental company to enter Oman, and many companies do not allow it at all. Ask before you book, not at the counter.

Fees at the border

Each traveller pays the UAE exit fee of AED 35. On the Omani side you show your visa or visa-free eligibility; if you arrive without an approved e-visa, expect delays at best and a refusal at worst.

Tips for the drive

  • Avoid the first and last hours of a long weekend. The Hatta crossing queues badly on Eid and National Day mornings and on the evening back.
  • Fill up in Oman. Fuel is usually cheaper on the Omani side.
  • Keep your documents in the front of the car. You will show them twice on the way out and twice on the way back.

Is there a train from Dubai to Oman?

Not yet. Hafeet Rail, the line linking Abu Dhabi and Al Ain with Sohar, is under construction; it was reported around 40% complete in 2026 and no passenger start date has been announced. Until it opens, the choice is bus, car or plane.

Flying instead

Muscat is about an hour and ten minutes from Dubai by air, and flydubai, Emirates and Oman Air all fly the route, with Air Arabia from Sharjah. For Salalah, flying is the only sensible option: it is more than 1,000 km by road from Muscat.

Planning a trip to Oman

A Muscat weekend works well by bus; Jebel Akhdar, the Wahiba Sands and the wadis need a car or a driver. See Oman visa services for the visa, or talk to us about hotels, a driver or a Musandam dhow trip.
