The short answer: Emiratis don't need a visa for Spain: they can stay up to 90 days in any 180. Indian, Pakistani, Filipino, Egyptian, Bangladeshi and Sri Lankan nationals living in the UAE need a Schengen visa. You apply at BLS International, Spain's visa centre, in Dubai or Abu Dhabi, and the Embassy of Spain in Abu Dhabi decides. The visa fee is AED 388 for adults, plus a AED 73 BLS service charge. Since July 2026 you must book the appointment yourself: BLS turns away appointments booked by agents. BLS tells tourists to allow at least three weeks for a decision.

Madrid's museums, Barcelona's Gaudí buildings and the Moorish cities of Andalusia make Spain one of the most popular Schengen trips from the UAE, and the visa is one of the most searched. Here is how the Spanish process works for UAE residents in 2026.

Who needs a visa for Spain

Whether you need a visa depends on your passport. UAE citizens have been able to visit Spain and the rest of the Schengen area without a visa since May 2015. They will need the EU's ETIAS travel authorisation once it starts; it hasn't yet, and the EU says it will announce the date several months in advance.

Indian, Pakistani, Filipino, Egyptian, Bangladeshi and Sri Lankan nationals need a Schengen visa. Living in the UAE decides where you apply, not whether you need a visa: EU rules say you apply in the country where you legally live.

Apply to Spain if it is your main destination, the country where you spend the most nights. A week in Barcelona with two nights in Paris is a Spanish application. See our Schengen visa guide for how the rule works on multi-country trips.

How to apply from Dubai or Abu Dhabi

  1. Book your appointment yourself on BLS International's Spain visa site for the UAE. Booking is free.
  2. Fill in the application form in English or Spanish, then sign and date it.
  3. Attend your appointment at either BLS centre: I Rise Tower in Barsha Heights, Dubai, or Tamouh Tower on Al Reem Island, Abu Dhabi. Both take submissions from 9am to 3pm, Monday to Friday. You hand in your documents, give fingerprints and pay the fees by cash or card.
  4. Collect your passport at the centre between 3pm and 5pm on a weekday, send someone with an authority letter, or pay for courier delivery.

BLS sends applications to the embassy the next working day. You can apply up to six months before you travel.

The July 2026 self-booking rule

In July 2026, BLS began requiring UAE applicants to book their own appointments. The booking is tied to your passport and personal details, and BLS says it refuses appointments made by travel agents or other intermediaries. Two other rules catch people out:

  • An appointment can't be rescheduled. You cancel it and book a new one, and any fees paid online at booking aren't refunded.
  • Spouses and family members of EU citizens now need an appointment too; they can no longer walk in.

An agent can still help you prepare your documents, but the appointment has to be yours. BLS says its staff never ask for payment to secure or speed up an appointment.

Documents

The embassy's checklist for a tourist visa asks for:

  • Passport valid at least three months beyond the visa you are requesting, issued within the last ten years, with at least two blank pages, plus your previous passport
  • UAE residence visa valid at least one month beyond the visa you are requesting, and copies of your UAE residence permits from the last five years (not needed for children)
  • One recent biometric photo on a white background, taken within the last six months
  • The signed application form
  • An original letter from your employer in English, stating your position, start date and salary. The NOC or salary certificate must be signed, with the signatory's full name and position, plus a copy of the Emirates ID.
  • Trade licence, translated into English or Spanish, if you own a business
  • Personal bank statements for the last three months
  • Travel medical insurance with at least EUR 30,000 of cover for the whole Schengen area and your whole stay. Insurance that comes with a credit card is not accepted.
  • Proof of accommodation: a hotel booking, a property deed or lease, or a police-stamped invitation letter (carta de invitación) from a host in Spain
  • A signed letter describing your itinerary, and your return flight booking
  • Copies of previous visas for the Schengen area, the US, the UK, Canada or Japan

Spouses or children sponsored by a family member add the sponsor's NOC, salary certificate, bank statement and passport copy. A child needs a birth certificate in English or Spanish and a consent letter signed by both parents. Couples of different nationalities add a translated marriage certificate.

How much money you need to show

Spain is one of the few Schengen countries that publishes a figure. Its 2026 amounts, published in the EU's Official Journal in April 2026, are EUR 122.10 per person per day, with a minimum of EUR 1,098.90 per person however short the trip. Border officers can ask for proof of these funds when you arrive. Your three months of bank statements should show at least this much, on top of a regular income.

Fees and optional services

Visa fee, children under 6Free
BLS service charge, every applicant73
Premium lounge (optional)450
Prime time, 3pm to 5pm submission (optional)262.50
Express passport delivery (optional)85

An adult applying without extras pays AED 461. BLS says the optional services don't speed up the embassy's decision. Fees aren't refunded if you are refused, and BLS can change them without notice.

Processing time

BLS's page for tourist visas says processing takes a minimum of three weeks, and tells applicants to submit at least three weeks before they travel. Another BLS page quotes the usual Schengen timing of 15 working days, extendable to 45. Plan on at least four weeks, and longer in summer, when Schengen appointments in the UAE are hardest to find. Don't book non-refundable flights before your visa is issued.

If you are refused, the refusal letter explains how to appeal to the Embassy of Spain and the time limit.

At the border

Since April 2026, Spain and every other Schengen country register non-EU visitors in the EU's Entry/Exit System. On your first trip after it started, you give fingerprints and a photo at passport control instead of getting a stamp. Keep your return ticket, hotel booking, insurance and proof of funds to hand.

Flights from the UAE

Emirates flies non-stop from Dubai to Madrid and Barcelona in about eight hours, and Etihad flies from Abu Dhabi to Madrid. For Seville, Málaga or Valencia, connect in Madrid, Barcelona or another European hub. Flights between the UAE and Europe were disrupted for much of 2026, so check your flight with the airline before you book, and make sure your flight reservation matches your application dates.

Planning a trip to Spain

A week covers Madrid and Barcelona by high-speed train; ten days adds Seville, Córdoba and Granada. Spring and autumn are the most comfortable seasons in Andalusia. Morocco is a short ferry ride across the Strait of Gibraltar, so check the Morocco visa rules for your passport, and make sure your Schengen visa allows more than one entry if you plan to come back. See our Schengen visa services for help preparing your Spain application, browse holiday packages, or talk to us about flights and hotels.
