Most UAE residents need a Tajikistan e-visa before they fly, applied for online at evisa.tj for about USD 50. Emiratis travel visa-free for up to 30 days, and anyone heading onto the Pamir Highway needs a GBAO permit too.

The short answer: Most UAE residents need a visa before they fly to Tajikistan, and which route you take depends on your passport. Emiratis (ordinary, diplomatic and special passports) have travelled visa-free for up to 30 days since 1 January 2022. Indian, Pakistani, Filipino, Bangladeshi, Sri Lankan, Egyptian, British and other Western passport holders apply online for an e-visa at evisa.tj, the official e-visa portal. Its own FAQ puts the fee at about USD 50, or about USD 70 with the GBAO permit, for an e-visa valid 90 days and a stay of up to 60 days. Anyone heading onto the Pamir Highway needs that separate GBAO permit on top of their visa.
Tajikistan is the newest Central Asian stop for UAE residents: the Fann Mountains, the Seven Lakes and the Pamir Highway are a single non-stop flight from Dubai, far closer than most people expect for a country this remote. The rules are set by passport, not by where you live, so holding a UAE residence visa makes no difference to any of the steps below.

Emiratis: visa-free entry
Tajikistan exempted UAE nationals holding ordinary, diplomatic and special passports from needing a pre-entry visa, effective 1 January 2022, under a decision the UAE's own Ministry of Foreign Affairs announced that December. The UAE's notice puts the allowed stay at up to 30 days per visit. If your trip runs close to a month, confirm the current limit with the Tajik embassy in Abu Dhabi before you travel.
- Passport validity: at least six months remaining after the date you arrive
- Longer stays: ask the Tajik embassy in Abu Dhabi about a visa before you travel
- Registration: visa-free visitors staying more than 10 days must register, see "Registering a longer stay" below
- Pamir Highway: the GBAO permit still applies to you
Everyone else: the e-visa
Indian, Pakistani, Filipino, Bangladeshi, Sri Lankan, Egyptian, British and other Western passport holders all need a visa, and for all of them the straightforward route is Tajikistan's e-visa.
- Apply at evisa.tj, the official portal. Type the address yourself rather than following an advert: paid third-party sites copy its look and add their own fee.
- Tick the GBAO permit option in the same application if you are going onto the Pamir Highway.
- Fill in the form, upload your documents and pay online. The portal takes the fee in US dollars only.
- Wait for approval by email, then print the e-visa and carry it with your passport.
Documents
- Passport valid at least six months from the date you plan to enter Tajikistan
- A scan of your passport photo page and a recent photo
- Your travel dates and where you will stay
- Hotel bookings or a letter of invitation, if asked: the UK government's travel advice says applicants may be asked for proof of hotel bookings or a tour operator's arrangements, usually as a letter of invitation from a sponsor in Tajikistan
- A card that can pay in US dollars
You can also apply in person through the Tajik embassy in Abu Dhabi or the consulate general in Dubai. Ask the mission which documents it needs before you go.
Fee, processing time and validity
- Fee: about USD 50 for the e-visa, or about USD 70 with the GBAO permit, according to the FAQ on evisa.tj. Confirm the exact amount at checkout.
- GBAO permit: USD 20, per the same FAQ. The portal does not refund a permit you do not use.
- Processing: the UK government's travel advice says to allow at least two weeks. Do not book non-refundable travel until the e-visa arrives.
- Validity and stay: evisa.tj says the e-visa is valid for 90 days, and that you can stay no more than 60 calendar days. The UK advice describes the validity differently, so read the dates printed on your own e-visa.
- Overstaying: the portal warns of fines, deportation or a ban. The UK advice adds that tourist visas cannot be extended, and that an overstayer needs an exit visa, which is not sold at airports.
Visa on arrival: only with approval in advance
The UK government's travel advice describes a physical visa on arrival in Tajikistan that must be approved before you travel: you apply online first and collect the visa sticker at the airport instead of printing an e-visa. It is not a visa for visitors who turn up with no paperwork. We could not find an official Tajik list of passports that can get a visa at the airport without applying first, so for the passports in this guide, plan around the e-visa, or for Emiratis, visa-free entry. If you have been told otherwise for your passport, get it in writing from the Tajik embassy in Abu Dhabi before you fly.
The GBAO permit for the Pamir Highway
Travel anywhere inside the Gorno-Badakhshan Autonomous Region (GBAO), which covers the Pamir Highway and towns including Khorog and Murghob, needs a permit on top of your visa, e-visa or visa-free entry. Every foreign visitor needs it, Emiratis included.
- With your e-visa: select the GBAO permit option during the application on evisa.tj.
- Before you travel, in person: ask the Tajik embassy in Abu Dhabi or the consulate general in Dubai.
- Once you are in Tajikistan: the UK government's advice says to contact the Consular Department of Tajikistan's Ministry of Foreign Affairs in Dushanbe.
The UK advice also warns that Tajikistan sometimes stops issuing permits to tourists at short notice for security reasons, so check that permits are being issued before you build a trip around the Pamirs. Checkpoints along the highway ask to see the permit alongside your passport, so carry copies and keep the original safe.
Registering a longer stay
If you enter Tajikistan without an e-visa, which for most readers of this guide means Emiratis using visa-free entry, and you stay more than 10 days, you must register with OVIR, the Office for Registration of Foreign Citizens in Dushanbe. The UK government's travel advice says hotels are no longer allowed to register guests on their behalf, that you must register again if you move to a different address, and that travellers who skip it may be fined, detained or stopped from leaving the country. E-visa holders do not need this separate step.
Tajikistan's embassy and consulate in the UAE
Tajikistan has a consulate general in Dubai, open since 2007, and an embassy in Abu Dhabi, inaugurated in 2011, according to the UAE's Ministry of Foreign Affairs. Ask either mission about applying in person or adding a GBAO permit. Directories list different addresses and phone numbers for each, so call ahead to confirm the current one before you visit.
Flights from the UAE
- Dubai to Dushanbe: flydubai flies non-stop every day from Dubai International's Terminal 2, in just under four hours. Its October 2026 schedule had flight FZ 793 leaving at 22:15 and landing in Dushanbe at 03:10.
- Air Arabia: its published destinations did not include Tajikistan when we checked.
From Abu Dhabi or Sharjah, check current timetables close to your travel date, since routes and schedules change.

Planning a trip to Tajikistan
Dushanbe's wide, Soviet-era boulevards, the turquoise Seven Lakes near Penjikent and the high-altitude Pamir Highway make Tajikistan one of the more dramatic short breaks from Dubai.
