The short answer: it depends on your passport, not on holding UAE residence. Emiratis and most Western passport holders (British, other European, American, Canadian, Australian and New Zealand passports among them) can enter Tunisia without a visa. Indian passport holders need a visa for an individual trip, but Tunisia's foreign ministry exempts Indian nationals travelling in an organised group of five or more, holding a hotel voucher and a return air ticket. Pakistani, Filipino, Bangladeshi, Sri Lankan and Egyptian passport holders need a visa for any visit, applied for in person at the Tunisian embassy in Abu Dhabi. We found no official Tunisian e-visa.
Tunisia draws UAE residents for the blue and white streets of Sidi Bou Said, the Medina of Tunis, the Roman amphitheatre at El Djem and the beaches of Hammamet and Djerba, and there are non-stop flights from both Dubai and Abu Dhabi. A UAE residence visa makes no difference to Tunisia's rules, so the answer turns entirely on the passport you hold.

Emiratis and Western passport holders: no visa needed
Holders of a UAE passport, and of most European, British, American, Canadian, Australian and New Zealand passports, can visit Tunisia without applying for a visa. The source is Tunisia's Ministry of Foreign Affairs, which publishes a country-by-country visa regime table marking whether each nationality needs a visa to enter Tunisia. The UAE, the UK, Ireland, France, Germany, Italy, Spain, the Netherlands, the Nordic countries, the US, Canada, Australia and New Zealand are all marked visa-free. The table is dated December 2023, but it is still the document the ministry's visa page links to, so treat it as the official guide and confirm anything critical with the embassy.
The table does not say how long a visa-free stay lasts. For British visitors, the UK government's travel advice gives up to 90 days, and says border officers stamp the passport on arrival and check the length of stay on departure, with a fine for overstaying. Holders of other visa-free passports should confirm their own limit with the embassy before planning a long stay.
Indian nationals: a visa, unless you travel in a qualifying group
Indian passport holders are not on Tunisia's visa-free list for an ordinary, individual visit. The same ministry table carries one exception, marked against India and China: their nationals are exempt from the entry visa when they travel in an organised group of at least five people, holding a hotel voucher and a return air ticket. Travelling alone, as a couple or in a smaller family group does not qualify, and the standard visa applies.
If you are booking a package with five or more travellers on one itinerary, ask the tour operator to confirm in writing that the booking meets this condition, and check with the embassy that the exemption still applies before you rely on it. Outside a qualifying group, Indian UAE residents apply for a regular visa at the Tunisian embassy in Abu Dhabi, in the same way as the passports below.
Pakistani, Filipino, Bangladeshi, Sri Lankan and Egyptian nationals: apply for a visa
These five passports are all marked as needing a visa on the ministry's table, with no organised-group exception. Egyptian passport holders are included. Apply at the Tunisian embassy in Abu Dhabi before you travel.
How to apply
We found no official e-visa for Tunisia. The foreign ministry's visa page tells applicants to go in person to the Tunisian embassy or consulate in their country of residence, to submit the application and explain the reasons for the trip. For UAE residents, that is the embassy in Abu Dhabi. Be wary of websites that charge for a Tunisia "e-visa".
- Contact the Embassy of Tunisia in Abu Dhabi to confirm the fee, processing time and document checklist for your passport. The ministry's site does not list them.
- Prepare your documents: your passport, photos, flight booking, hotel booking or an invitation, and your UAE residence visa and Emirates ID, plus anything else the embassy asks for.
- Apply in person at the embassy, and be ready to explain the purpose of your trip.
- Apply well ahead of your travel date, since no standard processing time is published.
At the border
Whether or not your passport needs a visa, the UK government's travel advice describes what Tunisian border officers can ask for:
- Your contact details
- A return or onward ticket
- Proof of a hotel booking or other accommodation. The UK advice says a small number of visitors have been refused entry or delayed for not having enough evidence of where they are staying.
- A passport in good condition, valid for the whole stay. A damaged or torn passport can cause problems when you leave.
The UK advice also mentions a hotel tax paid on arrival: 8 dinars per person per night at 3-star hotels and 12 dinars at 4- and 5-star hotels, for up to ten nights.
Money
Tunisia has strict currency controls. You cannot take Tunisian dinars out of the country, so change back what you have left before you fly home. If you are carrying a large amount of foreign currency, check the declaration rules before you travel: the UK advice warns that undeclared foreign currency can be confiscated.
Flights from the UAE
- From Abu Dhabi: Etihad has flown non-stop to Tunis since 1 November 2025. Since 16 January 2026, the flights are also sold under Tunisair flight numbers through a codeshare.
- From Dubai: Emirates flies non-stop to Tunis.
- From Sharjah: check Air Arabia's current timetable.
Tunisia is three hours behind the UAE. Confirm your route and dates with the airline close to the time, since schedules change.
Frequently asked questions
Do UAE residents need a visa for Tunisia?
It depends on your passport, not your UAE residence. Emiratis and most Western passport holders do not need one. Indian, Pakistani, Filipino, Bangladeshi, Sri Lankan and Egyptian passport holders do, though Indian nationals are exempt when travelling in a qualifying organised group.
Do Emiratis need a visa for Tunisia?
No. The UAE is on the visa-free list in the Tunisian foreign ministry's published visa regime table. Carry a return ticket and your hotel booking, since border officers can ask for both.
Do Indians need a visa for Tunisia from Dubai?
For an individual trip, yes. Tunisia exempts Indian nationals from the visa only when they travel in an organised group of five or more, with a hotel voucher and a return ticket. Otherwise, apply at the Tunisian embassy in Abu Dhabi.
Do Pakistanis need a visa for Tunisia?
Yes, for any visit, with no organised-group exception. Apply in person at the Tunisian embassy in Abu Dhabi before you travel.
Is there a Tunisia e-visa?
We found no official one. The foreign ministry tells applicants to apply in person at the embassy in their country of residence, which for UAE residents is Abu Dhabi. Be wary of paid sites claiming to issue a Tunisia e-visa.
Can you get a Tunisia visa on arrival?
Not for the passports most UAE residents hold. Tunisia's published rules work by exemption, not by issuing visas at the airport: the group rule for Indian and Chinese nationals waives the visa rather than issuing one on arrival.
