North Macedonia Visa for UAE Residents: Who Needs One and How to Apply

Emiratis, and UK, US and Canadian passport holders, don't need a North Macedonia visa; Indian, Pakistani, Filipino, Bangladeshi, Sri Lankan and Egyptian passports do. A valid Schengen, UK, US or Canadian visa can waive it instead, for up to 15 days.

The short answer: Emiratis do not need a visa for North Macedonia, and neither do holders of ordinary UK, US or Canadian passports, according to the official checker run by North Macedonia's Ministry of Foreign Affairs. Most of the UAE's other big expat communities do need one: Indian, Pakistani, Filipino, Bangladeshi, Sri Lankan and Egyptian passports all show as "visa needed" on the same checker. If you already hold a valid multiple-entry Schengen, UK, US or Canadian visa, or a residence permit from an EU or Schengen country, you may be able to enter without a North Macedonia visa at all, for up to 15 days, under rules that run to the end of 2026. A UAE residence visa on its own is not one of the documents this covers.

Skopje's old bazaar, the monasteries around Lake Ohrid and the canyon at Matka are an easy add-on to a Balkan trip, and North Macedonia's visa rules are more forgiving than most of its neighbours for anyone who already travels on a Western visa. Here is who needs what, as of October 2026, and how the paperwork actually works.

These results come from North Macedonia's own online visa checker, run by its Ministry of Foreign Affairs, current as of October 2026. They are decided by passport, not by where you live, so a UAE residence visa does not change them.

Who is exempt, and who needs a visa

Emiratis, and UK, US and Canadian passports: no visa

Emirati passport holders can enter North Macedonia without a visa. The ministry's checker does not publish how many days this covers, so carry a return or onward ticket and confirm the limit if you are planning a long stay. British, American and Canadian ordinary passport holders are also visa-free on the same checker; the UK government's own travel advice says British citizens can visit North Macedonia for up to three months without a visa.

Indian, Pakistani, Filipino, Bangladeshi, Sri Lankan and Egyptian passports: a visa first

All six need a short-stay (type C) visa before they travel, applied for in person at the North Macedonian mission that covers their passport. The ministry's checker names a mission for only two of these: India, whose applicants are directed to North Macedonia's mission in New Delhi, and Egypt, directed to its mission in Cairo. For Pakistani, Filipino, Bangladeshi and Sri Lankan passports, the checker names no mission at all. If that is your passport and you live in the UAE, email North Macedonia's visa centre at vizencentar@mfa.gov.mk or call +389 2 3115 266 to ask which office can take your application; its embassy in Abu Dhabi, the mission named for the UAE itself, is the obvious place to ask first.

The 2026 waiver for Schengen, UK, US and Canadian visa holders

Separately from the lists above, North Macedonia lets some travellers in without its own visa if they already hold a valid visa or residence permit from certain other places. None of these rules mention a UAE residence visa, so holding one does not help here on its own; what counts is the visa or residence permit itself.

  • EU and Schengen nationals do not need a visa at all, and can enter on a valid national identity card rather than a passport.
  • Third-country nationals with a residence permit from an EU or Schengen country (temporary or permanent) may enter without a North Macedonia visa for up to 15 days per entry, with total stays capped at 90 days in any 180-day period.
  • Holders of a valid multiple-entry Schengen type C visa, with at least 5 days of validity left beyond the planned stay, get the same 15-day entry and 90/180-day cap.
  • Holders of a valid multiple-entry visa issued by Canada, the UK or the US, also valid at least 5 days beyond the planned stay, may enter visa-free for up to 15 days under a temporary decision the ministry says runs from 1 January 2026 to 31 December 2026. The decision is temporary, so confirm it is still in force close to your travel date.

If your passport needs a North Macedonia visa but you already hold one of these documents, multiple-entry and with enough validity left, it may let you skip the visa altogether. Carry the visa itself (or a valid EU or Schengen residence permit), your passport and proof of your travel plans, since the decision applies at the border, not in advance.

How to apply for the visa

If your passport is on the "visa required" list and you have no qualifying UK, US, Schengen or Canadian visa to rely on instead, you apply for North Macedonia's short-stay (type C) visa.

  1. Apply in person at the North Macedonian mission that covers your passport, no earlier than six months and no later than 15 days before you travel. The ministry allows someone else to apply on your behalf only in exceptional cases, such as a disability; a parent or guardian applies for a minor.
  2. Bring your documents (below) and a completed application form.
  3. Pay the fee, EUR 60 for an adult, at the mission.
  4. Wait for a decision. The ministry's own pages do not publish a processing time for this visa, so apply as early in the window as you can.

Documents

  • Passport, issued within the last 10 years, valid at least 3 months beyond the visa you are asking for, with at least two blank visa pages
  • One photo, 35 x 45 mm
  • Travel medical insurance covering your whole stay
  • Proof of the fee paid
  • Proof of your travel plans: accommodation booking, itinerary, and a return ticket or onward travel
  • Proof you can cover the trip, such as a bank or credit card statement
  • If someone in North Macedonia is sponsoring your stay, a notarised guarantee letter from them, or a notarised invitation if a company is sponsoring you

Fees and visa types

  • Short-stay (C) visa: EUR 60 for an adult, EUR 35 for a child aged 6 to 12, covering a stay of up to 90 days.
  • Transit visa: the same type C visa also covers transit, for up to 5 days.
  • Airport transit (A) visa: for passengers who don't leave the airside area; the ministry's published pages don't give its fee.
  • Long-stay (D) visa, for work, study or family reunion, is a separate process that starts only after North Macedonia's Ministry of Interior approves temporary residence; it isn't for a holiday trip.

North Macedonia's embassy in Abu Dhabi is listed in the ministry's embassy directory (email abudabi@mfa.gov.mk). Email before you go, to confirm current hours and that it can take your application if the checker named a different mission for your passport.

Arrival rules

The UK government's travel advice, written for British citizens, sets out what to expect at the border:

  • Passport validity: at least 90 days beyond your arrival date.
  • Police registration: every visitor registers with the local police within 48 hours of arrival. Hotels normally do this at check-in; keep the registration slip until you leave.
  • Currency declaration: declare cash of EUR 10,000 or more on arrival, or customs can seize it when you leave.

Flights from the UAE

Most trips from the UAE to Skopje or Ohrid connect in Europe or Istanbul. Check the airlines' own sites for current routes from Dubai, Abu Dhabi and Sharjah, since Balkan routes from the Gulf often change by season.

Frequently asked questions

Do UAE residents need a visa for North Macedonia?

It depends on your passport. Emiratis, and British, American and Canadian passport holders, do not need one. Indian, Pakistani, Filipino, Bangladeshi, Sri Lankan and Egyptian passport holders do.

Do Indians in the UAE need a visa for North Macedonia?

Yes. North Macedonia's visa checker lists a visa as required for Indian passports, applied for at its mission in New Delhi. A valid multiple-entry Schengen, UK, US or Canadian visa, with enough validity left, may let you enter visa-free instead, for up to 15 days.

Is North Macedonia visa-free for Schengen visa holders?

Not entirely free of conditions, but close. A valid multiple-entry Schengen type C visa, valid at least 5 days beyond your planned stay, lets you enter without a North Macedonia visa for up to 15 days, within an overall cap of 90 days in any 180-day period.

How much does a North Macedonia visa from Dubai cost?

The short-stay visa costs EUR 60 for an adult and EUR 35 for a child aged 6 to 12, paid at the North Macedonian mission covering your passport. The ministry's pages don't name a UAE dirham price, so budget in euros.

Do Pakistani nationals need a visa for North Macedonia?

Yes, per the ministry's checker. It names no specific mission for Pakistani passports, so contact North Macedonia's visa centre (vizencentar@mfa.gov.mk) to confirm where to apply, or ask its embassy in Abu Dhabi.

Can I fly to Skopje from the UAE without a visa if I'm an Emirati?

Yes. North Macedonia's own checker shows no visa is needed for UAE passports. It doesn't state a day limit, so carry a return ticket and ask at the border if you plan to stay more than a few weeks.

Planning a trip to North Macedonia

A few days covers Skopje's old bazaar and fortress, with a day trip to the Matka Canyon; add two or three nights on Lake Ohrid for its monasteries and the old town.
