The short answer: April to June and September to November are Turkey's best all-round months: warm enough for Istanbul and the Aegean coast, mild enough for Cappadocia's hot air balloons to fly reliably, and well short of the July-August heat and crowds. The coast's swimming season runs roughly May to October, Antalya's sea reaching about 29°C in August. Cappadocia's hot air balloons fly most consistently in May, June, September and October; winter grounds more flights for wind. December to March is ski season at Uludağ, Erciyes and Palandöken. Our National Day package to Turkey departs 2 December 2026, early winter, so expect cold mornings in Cappadocia and Istanbul rather than beach weather.

This guide covers Turkey's weather and crowds month by month, for travellers deciding when to go rather than where. For the places themselves, see our places to visit in Turkey guide; for costs and a full itinerary, see Turkey trip from Dubai.

Average temperatures by month

Istanbul and Cappadocia (Göreme) figures below are daytime highs, with Cappadocia's night-time lows added since they swing much further than the coast; Antalya's figures are sea temperature, not air temperature, since that is what decides the coast's swimming season. All come from weather2travel's Turkey climate pages.

Istanbul's night-time lows run roughly 6 to 9°C below the daytime figures above in winter (around 2°C overnight in January) and closer to 18°C in high summer, per the same source; pack a proper coat for a winter weekend regardless of the daytime number, since wind off the Bosphorus adds a real chill.

Istanbul: mild shoulder seasons, a cold damp winter

Istanbul's warm season, when daytime highs sit above about 25°C, runs roughly June to September, with July and August the hottest and most humid. April, May, late September and October are the easier months for walking around Sultanahmet and the Bosphorus: mild days, cooler evenings, and noticeably fewer tour groups at Topkapi Palace and Hagia Sophia than in peak summer. Winter (December to February) is cold, grey and often wet, rarely dropping below freezing in the city itself but unpleasant for a full day of outdoor sightseeing; it is also the cheapest and quietest time to visit if the sights matter more to you than the weather.

Cappadocia: weather, and when balloons actually fly

Cappadocia's high desert climate swings harder than the coast: warm, dry days from May to September, then a real drop into near-freezing nights from November through March, with snow a regular feature of winter mornings. For the valleys and the Göreme Open-Air Museum, April to June and September to October are the most comfortable months to walk, avoiding both summer heat and winter ice.

For the hot air balloons specifically, the weather matters more than the calendar month alone. Flights need wind under a set limit (commonly cited at around 11 km/h) and the call is made at the field at dawn, so a single morning can be cancelled with little notice regardless of season. 2026 operator data most often puts flight success in the high 80s to low 90s as a percentage of mornings in May, June, September and October, dropping into the 70s percentage range by November and lower again in the depths of winter, when unpredictable wind cancels more flights. That said, a clear winter morning over snow-covered valleys is, by most accounts, the most striking version of the flight, so travellers with flexible dates sometimes choose December to February on purpose and simply accept a higher chance of a weather day. Whatever the month, book your flight for your first morning in the region, not your last, so a cancellation leaves room to try again.

The coast: Antalya, Bodrum and Fethiye's beach season

The Antalya coast's sea temperature, in the table above, stays around 16 to 17°C from January through April, too cool for most people to swim comfortably, then climbs through May (about 21°C) and June (24°C) into a July-to-September peak near 27 to 29°C. October still holds a pleasant 25°C before the sea cools again into November and December. In practice, May to October is the swimmable season on the Turquoise Coast, Bodrum included, with July and August the hottest, busiest and most expensive weeks, and May, June and September the better value months for a beach trip without the summer crowds or the highest heat.

Pamukkale: avoid the midsummer heat

Pamukkale and Hierapolis sit inland near Denizli, where summer afternoons run hot and the white travertine terraces offer little shade, so a midday July or August visit is genuinely uncomfortable, even before the walk around the ruins. Spring and autumn give a cooler, more pleasant visit, and the site stays open through winter, when the terraces are quieter but the water can feel cold against a chilly day. Whatever the season, go early morning or late afternoon to avoid both the heat and the day-tripper coach groups that arrive around midday.

The Black Sea uplands, and Turkey's ski season

Trabzon and Sümela Monastery sit in a wetter, greener climate than the rest of the country, with rain a possibility in any month and the heaviest falls typically in autumn; summer (June to September) is the easiest season for the drive up to the monastery and for Uzungöl's lakeside walks. Inland and at altitude, Turkey's ski resorts run on a separate calendar entirely: Uludağ, above Bursa, and Erciyes, near Kayseri and Cappadocia, and Palandöken, above Erzurum, typically operate from December to March or April, snow depending, with January and February the most reliable months for a full programme of runs. Confirm each resort's current opening dates and lift status before you book, since the season's start and finish shift by a few weeks most years.

Crowds and prices, season by season

July and August are Turkey's busiest and most expensive weeks almost everywhere: Istanbul's major sights run long queues, Cappadocia's cave hotels and balloon operators charge their highest rates, and the coast's beach towns fill up with European summer holidaymakers as well as regional visitors. Shoulder months, April to June and September to November, bring noticeably shorter queues and lower hotel and balloon prices while keeping comfortable daytime temperatures almost everywhere except the coldest months of the ski season. Deep winter (December to February, outside the ski resorts) is Turkey's quietest and cheapest stretch: hotel rates in Istanbul and Cappadocia drop, flights are easier to find, and the main sights are far less crowded, in exchange for cold, sometimes wet or snowy days and a real chance of a cancelled balloon flight.

How it fits UAE school holidays, Eid and National Day

The UAE's unified school calendar for 2026-27 sets an autumn half-term around 12 to 18 October 2026 (12 to 16 October in school days; some Dubai private schools take 19 to 23 October instead), a winter break from roughly 14 December 2026 to early January 2027, and a spring break around 5 to 11 April 2027 (individual emirates and school groups vary slightly, so confirm your own school's dates). October's half-term lands inside Turkey's good shoulder season, still comfortable for Istanbul and the coast and a strong month for Cappadocia balloons. The spring break in early April is also a solid match: Istanbul and the Aegean are mild, Cappadocia's valleys are green, though the coast's sea is not yet warm enough for most swimmers. The winter break, mid-December to early January, suits a ski trip to Uludağ or a cold-weather Cappadocia balloon flight for travellers who don't mind the lower success rate, but it is a poor fit for a beach holiday.

UAE National Day, 2 to 3 December 2026, is early winter in Turkey: our National Day package departs on 2 December itself, which means cold mornings in Cappadocia and Istanbul rather than warm beach days, offset by lower prices and thinner crowds. Eid Al Fitr 2027 is expected around 9 to 10 March (subject to moon sighting), still cool and sometimes wet across the country. Eid Al Adha 2027 is expected around 15 to 18 May, which lands squarely in Turkey's best season: warm but not yet peak-summer hot, with the coast's sea freshly warmed and Cappadocia's balloons flying at their most reliable.

Frequently asked questions

What is the best time to visit Turkey overall?

April to June and September to November, when Istanbul and the coast are warm but not at their hottest, crowds are thinner than midsummer, and Cappadocia's hot air balloons fly most reliably.

What is the best time to visit Cappadocia for a hot air balloon?

May, June, September and October have the highest reported flight-success rates, commonly in the high 80s to low 90s as a percentage of mornings. Winter sees more cancellations for wind, though a clear snowy morning is often described as the most dramatic version of the flight.

What is the best time to visit Istanbul?

April, May, late September and October give mild days and shorter queues at the major sights. June to August is hottest and busiest; December to February is cold and often wet, but quiet and cheap.

When does the Turkish coast become warm enough to swim?

Roughly May to October on the Antalya coast and around Bodrum and Fethiye, based on sea temperature; July, August and September are the warmest months, with the sea near 27 to 29°C.

When is ski season in Turkey?

Roughly December to March or April at Uludağ, Erciyes and Palandöken, snow depending. Confirm each resort's current season dates before booking lift passes, since they shift by a few weeks most years.

Is December a good time to visit Turkey?

It is Turkey's cold season almost everywhere except the ski resorts: expect low daytime temperatures in Cappadocia and a real chance of balloon cancellations, and a cold, sometimes wet Istanbul. It is also the quietest and cheapest time to go, and the start of Turkey's ski season.
