The short answer: Emiratis do not need a visa for New Zealand. Like British, EU and US passport holders, they need only an NZeTA, from NZD 17, plus the NZD 100 visitor levy. Most other UAE residents, including Indian, Pakistani, Filipino, Egyptian, Bangladeshi and Sri Lankan nationals, need a Visitor Visa. It costs NZD 441 including the levy, and you apply entirely online through Immigration New Zealand. Immigration New Zealand says it decides 80% of applications within two weeks. Expect to show about NZD 1,000 a month for your stay.

Milford Sound, Queenstown, the Hobbiton set, Rotorua's geysers and the Southern Alps are a long way from the UAE: about 17 hours non-stop from Dubai to Auckland. Most visitors combine it with Australia. Here is what each group of UAE residents needs.

NZeTA for Emiratis

The UAE is on New Zealand's list of visa-waiver countries, so Emirati citizens can visit for up to three months without a visa. Before travelling, though, they need a New Zealand Electronic Travel Authority (NZeTA), which airlines check at boarding.

  • Apply in the official NZeTA app or on the Immigration New Zealand website. The app is the cheaper option, and copycat sites charge far more.
  • Cost: from NZD 17, plus the International Visitor Conservation and Tourism Levy (IVL) of NZD 100, paid at the same time
  • Validity: two years, for multiple visits
  • When: apply a few days before you fly, not at the airport

The same applies to UAE residents with EU, US and most other Western passports. British passport holders can stay up to six months.

The Visitor Visa for expat residents

India, Pakistan, the Philippines, Egypt, Bangladesh and Sri Lanka are not visa-waiver countries, so their nationals need a Visitor Visa. You do not need to apply from your home country: UAE residents apply online from the UAE.

  1. Create an account with a RealMe login on Immigration New Zealand's online system. Since 24 September 2026, new visitor visa applications go through its new, enhanced version of Immigration Online.
  2. Fill in the application and upload your documents.
  3. Pay by card: NZD 441, made up of the NZD 341 visa fee and the NZD 100 IVL. These fees have applied since 1 October 2024.

Most applications are decided without sending your passport anywhere. If Immigration New Zealand asks for documents in person, it uses VFS Global visa application centres, including one in Dubai.

Documents and how much money to show

Immigration New Zealand wants evidence of who you are, what you plan to do, how you will pay for it and that you will leave. For a holiday from the UAE, that usually means:

  • Passport and a recent photo
  • Proof of funds: Immigration New Zealand's long-standing guideline is NZD 1,000 for each month of your stay, or NZD 400 a month if your accommodation is already paid for. Recent bank statements are the usual evidence.
  • An onward or return ticket, or proof you can buy one
  • Your plans: itinerary and hotel bookings, or an invitation from family or friends
  • Ties to the UAE: your residence visa, Emirates ID and an employer letter showing approved leave

No chest X-ray or medical is needed for a visit of up to six months, unless Immigration New Zealand specifically asks for one.

Processing time

Immigration New Zealand publishes a target of deciding 80% of visitor visa applications within two weeks. Some take longer, so apply at least six to eight weeks before you travel, and wait for the decision before you buy non-refundable flights.

Does an Australian visa help?

Not for most UAE residents. A trial from late 2025 lets Chinese nationals with an Australian visa use an NZeTA instead of a visitor visa, but Indian, Pakistani, Filipino, Egyptian, Bangladeshi and Sri Lankan nationals still need a full New Zealand Visitor Visa, whatever Australian visa they hold. Apply for both visas separately if you are combining the two countries.

Flights from the UAE

Emirates flies non-stop from Dubai to Auckland, one of the longest flights in the world, at about 17 hours outbound and 16 hours back. For Christchurch, Emirates flies via Sydney. Other routes connect through Australian or Asian hubs. Schedules change, so check with the airline before you book.
