Japan Visa for UAE Residents 2026: VFS, eVisa, Fees and Processing Time

The short answer: Emiratis with an ICAO-compliant e-passport can visit Japan for up to 90 days without a visa. Most other UAE residents need a visa, including Indian, Pakistani, Filipino, Egyptian, Bangladeshi and Sri Lankan nationals. Since August 2024, every application from the UAE has gone through VFS Global in Dubai or Abu Dhabi, by appointment. Any visa-required nationality living in the UAE can now be issued Japan's eVisa, but you still hand in your documents at VFS. Japan raised its visa fees on 1 July 2026, to a reported ¥15,000 for a single entry. Allow at least 8 to 10 working days for processing.

Tokyo, Kyoto, Osaka and Mount Fuji are about nine to ten hours' non-stop flight from the UAE, and Japan has become one of the most popular long-haul trips for UAE residents. The rules changed a lot between 2024 and 2026, so advice from a year or two ago is likely to be out of date.

Do you need a Japan visa?

It depends on your passport, not your UAE residence. Your residence decides where you apply, not whether you must.

• Emiratis: since 1 July 2025, UAE citizens with an ICAO-compliant e-passport can stay up to 90 days without a visa, up from 30. Check with the Embassy of Japan in Abu Dhabi before you fly if your passport is an older type.
• British, EU, American, Canadian and Australian passport holders, and many others, are also visa-exempt for a short visit.
• Indian, Pakistani, Filipino, Egyptian, Bangladeshi and Sri Lankan nationals, among many others, need a visa wherever they live.

Japan plans to introduce JESTA, an online pre-travel authorisation for visa-exempt visitors such as Emiratis, by fiscal 2028. Until then, visa-exempt travellers simply fly.

How to apply from Dubai or Abu Dhabi

Since 1 August 2024, the Consulate-General of Japan in Dubai and the Embassy in Abu Dhabi no longer take visa applications over the counter. Everything goes through VFS Global, the consulate's outsourcing partner.

1. Check the VFS checklist for a tourist visa and gather your documents.
2. Book an appointment online at the VFS centre in Dubai (Wafi Mall) or Abu Dhabi (The Mall, World Trade Center).
3. Attend in person, hand in your passport and documents, and pay the visa fee and the VFS service charge.
4. Collect your passport, or receive your eVisa, once the consulate has decided.

The Japan eVisa for UAE residents

Japan's eVisa used to be limited to a few nationalities. It now goes by where you live: anyone of a visa-required nationality who lives in the UAE can be issued one for a short tourist visit. Two things often surprise people:

• It is not fully online from the UAE. You still book a VFS appointment and hand in your documents there. Only residents of a few countries, such as the UK, the US, Canada, Australia and Saudi Arabia, can apply entirely online.
• The visa itself is electronic. It is issued as a digital visa rather than a sticker in your passport. Follow the instructions that come with it on how to show it at check-in and at immigration.

The eVisa covers single-entry short stays for tourism. For any other purpose, or for a multiple-entry visa, you apply for a regular visa through VFS instead.

Documents and the daily itinerary

For a tourist visa from the UAE, expect to provide:

• Passport, valid for your whole stay, with blank pages
• The visa application form, completed and signed
• A recent photo, 45 by 35 mm, on a plain background
• Your UAE residence visa and Emirates ID
• A flight reservation in and out of Japan
• Hotel bookings for the whole trip
• A schedule of stay: where you will be on each day
• Recent bank statements in your name
• An employment letter or NOC, or your trade licence if you run a business

The daily itinerary is the part people underestimate. Japan's schedule-of-stay form asks where you will be on each day of the trip, and it should match your hotel bookings. "Tokyo and Kyoto" is not enough. That means planning the trip properly before you apply, not after. VFS publishes the exact checklist, including how many months of bank statements it wants, so use the current one.

Fees after the July 2026 increase

Japan raised its visa fees on 1 July 2026. The new rates are reported at ¥15,000 for a single-entry visa, up from ¥3,000, and ¥30,000 for multiple entry, up from ¥6,000. Check the current amount in dirhams with VFS before your appointment.

• Indian nationals pay a lower fee under a reciprocal arrangement between the two countries.
• VFS service charge: about AED 100 to 110 including VAT, on top of the visa fee, according to VFS's fee sheets.

Processing time

Allow at least 8 to 10 working days after VFS takes your application, and 3 to 4 weeks if the consulate asks for more documents. Both the UAE and Japan have public holidays that slow things down, Japan's Golden Week in late April and early May among them. Apply three to four weeks before you fly, and don't book non-refundable flights until the visa is granted.

Applying on an Indian, Pakistani or Filipino passport

All three need a visa for Japan, and your UAE residence does not change that. What it changes is where you apply: at VFS in Dubai or Abu Dhabi, rather than in your home country. As a UAE resident you can be issued the eVisa for a tourist trip.

Indian nationals have two advantages: a lower visa fee, and a separate route to a multiple-entry visa for those who meet its conditions, which suits frequent travellers. Pakistani and Filipino nationals apply under the standard rules. For every nationality, the daily itinerary and bank statements matter more than anything else on the checklist.

When to go

Japan's two peak seasons are cherry blossom in late March and April and autumn colour in November. Hotels sell out months ahead for both. Because you need hotel bookings and a daily itinerary to apply, the order is: plan, book, then apply. Leave the visa to the end and you may find yourself applying around whatever rooms were left.

Emirates flies non-stop from Dubai to Tokyo Narita, Tokyo Haneda and Osaka Kansai, in about nine to ten hours eastbound. Etihad flies from Abu Dhabi to Tokyo Narita.
