Japan has quietly become one of the most popular long-haul destinations for UAE residents — about ten hours from Dubai, and completely unlike anywhere else you can reach in that time. The visa is more straightforward than most people expect, with one significant catch: whether you need one at all depends entirely on your passport.
First: do you actually need a Japan visa?
Japan grants visa-free short-stay entry to passport holders of a long list of countries, including most of Europe, the United Kingdom, the United States, Canada, Australia, Singapore and Malaysia. If you hold one of those passports, you do not need a visa for tourism — you simply travel.
Everyone else applies in advance. That includes Indian, Pakistani, Filipino, Sri Lankan, Bangladeshi, Egyptian and Nigerian passport holders, among many others.
UAE nationals hold a separate arrangement and should check their current position directly, as it differs from the general rules.
Note what does not matter here: your UAE residence does not exempt you from a Japan visa. It determines where you apply, not whether you must.
Applying from Dubai
If your nationality requires a visa, you apply through the Consulate-General of Japan in Dubai — or the Embassy in Abu Dhabi — while holding valid UAE residence. Applications are commonly handled through an accredited agency rather than in person at the consulate.
Some nationalities are now eligible for a Japan eVisa, applied for entirely online with no passport submission. Eligibility has been expanding, so check whether your nationality qualifies before booking an appointment — it is considerably less hassle when available.

- Completed visa application form
- Recent passport photograph to specification
- UAE residence visa and Emirates ID, with sufficient validity remaining
- Confirmed return flight booking
- Hotel bookings for the whole trip
- A day-by-day itinerary — Japan asks for this specifically
- Bank statements, usually three to six months
- Employment letter and NOC, or trade licence
The daily itinerary is the part people underestimate. Japan expects a schedule showing where you will be on each day of the trip, matched to your hotel bookings. A vague "Tokyo and Kyoto" is not what is being asked for. It is administrative rather than difficult — but it does mean planning your trip properly before you apply, not after.
How long does it take?
Japanese visa processing is generally quick by international standards — often around five working days once a complete application is submitted, sometimes less. The eVisa route, where available, can be faster still.
Apply a few weeks ahead regardless. Consulates close for both UAE and Japanese public holidays, and Japan has more of them than most countries.

The consular fee for a single-entry short-stay visa is modest — Japan is among the cheaper visas to obtain. Multiple-entry visas cost more. Add any agency handling charge if you apply through an accredited agency.

When to go, and how that affects your application
Japan's two peak seasons are cherry blossom in late March and April and autumn colour in November. Both are genuinely worth planning around, and both mean hotels sell out months ahead.
