Visa-Free Countries for Indian Passport Holders: The 2026 List for UAE Residents
On an Indian passport alone, roughly 55 countries are visa-free, on arrival or a quick e-visa. UAE residence unlocks a further set, and a valid US, UK or Schengen visa unlocks another.

The short answer: on an Indian passport alone, the most recent Henley Passport Index (its July 2026, 20th-anniversary edition) puts India around 80th in the world, with reports giving it access to 55 or 56 destinations without a visa arranged in advance – outlets differ by a destination or two, because Henley updates the index through the year rather than all at once. What most guides miss is the second passport in an Indian expatriate's pocket: a UAE residence visa. On its own it does not unlock most of the world, but in a short list of countries – Armenia, Georgia, Azerbaijan, and the GCC states themselves – it gets you a visa on arrival or a quick online visa that your Indian passport alone would not. Separately, a valid US, UK or Schengen visa opens a different short list, including Turkey, Mexico and four Balkan states. This guide covers all three layers: what the passport gets you by itself, what the UAE residence adds, and what a Western visa adds.
This question comes up most for Indian nationals settled in Dubai, Abu Dhabi and Sharjah who are planning a holiday, a stopover or a long weekend and want to know, before they look at flights, whether they need to start a visa application. It also comes up when someone is choosing between two destinations and wants to know which one is actually easier to enter. The lists below separate four situations: where the Indian passport alone is enough, where you collect a visa on arrival, where a free or fast e-visa does the job, and the two cases – UAE residence, or a US/UK/Schengen visa – where something other than the passport does the work.
Visa-free countries for Indian passport holders at a glance
| Question | Answer (October 2026) |
|---|---|
| Henley Passport Index count | Around 55–56 destinations without a visa arranged ahead; reports disagree by one or two, and the rank itself (about 80th) moves during the year |
| Fully visa-free, no paperwork | Nepal, Bhutan (free permit, nightly fee), Mauritius, Kazakhstan (14 days), Thailand (30 days), Malaysia (30 days, until 31 Dec 2026) |
| Visa on arrival | Maldives (free, 30 days), Indonesia (fee, 30 days) |
| Free or fast e-visa / ETA | Sri Lanka, Hong Kong, Vietnam, Cambodia, Kenya |
| UAE residence unlocks a visa on arrival or an easy online visa | Armenia, Georgia, Azerbaijan, Saudi Arabia, Qatar, Bahrain, Kuwait, Oman |
| A valid US, UK or Schengen visa unlocks entry | Turkey (e-Visa eligibility), Mexico, Serbia, Bosnia and Herzegovina, Albania, Montenegro |
| Dates to watch | Malaysia's exemption runs only to 31 Dec 2026; Thailand cut its exemption from 60 to 30 days on 15 Sep 2026; Montenegro's UAE-resident summer waiver ended 1 Oct 2026 and had not been renewed as of 8 Oct 2026 |
Where an Indian passport alone is enough
These destinations ask nothing in advance: no e-visa, no fee, no UAE residence requirement. You still need a passport with months of validity to spare, a return ticket and, for most of them, a free digital arrival form completed shortly before you fly.
| Destination | Stay allowed | Notes |
|---|---|---|
| Nepal | No fixed limit stated for tourism | Rests on the 1950 India–Nepal treaty. A passport or a photo voter ID is accepted; Aadhaar is not valid for air travel into Nepal |
| Bhutan | 15–30 days (sources differ) on a free entry permit | Apply online at immi.gov.bt or get the permit on arrival at Paro or Phuentsholing. A Sustainable Development Fee of roughly INR 1,200 a night (about AED 55) applies for travel beyond the border towns. Aadhaar, PAN and driving licences are not accepted; carry a passport or voter ID |
| Mauritius | Set by the immigration officer on arrival | No visa or fee at all for an Indian passport. Every traveller still completes the free Mauritius All-in-One Travel Digital Form online before flying – see our Mauritius visa guide |
| Kazakhstan | Up to 14 days | Decided by passport, not UAE residence – see our Kazakhstan visa guide |
| Thailand | Up to 30 days, tourism only | Cut from 60 days on 15 Sep 2026. The free Thailand Digital Arrival Card is mandatory before landing – see our Thailand visa guide |
| Malaysia | Up to 30 days, tourism only, until 31 Dec 2026 | A time-limited exemption, extended repeatedly since 2023 but not guaranteed beyond this date. The free Malaysia Digital Arrival Card (MDAC) is due within 3 days of arrival – see our Malaysia visa guide |
Treat Thailand and Malaysia's numbers as current, not permanent: Thailand has changed its rule for Indian travellers twice in 2026 already, and Malaysia's exemption has always carried an end date that gets renewed rather than removed. Check the destination's own immigration page close to your travel date rather than relying on last year's screenshot.
Visa on arrival: nothing to apply for before you fly
A visa on arrival still means a counter, a form or a fee at the airport, but no approval before you board.
| Destination | Fee | Stay | Notes |
|---|---|---|---|
| Maldives | Free | 30 days | Needs a return ticket, a prepaid booking at a registered resort or hotel, and the free IMUGA traveller declaration online within 96 hours of arrival – see our Maldives visa guide |
| Indonesia (including Bali) | IDR 500,000 (about AED 110) | 30 days, extendable once | Either pay at the airport or clear it online in advance as an e-VoA, usually approved within hours. Bali adds a separate IDR 150,000 tourist levy – see our Indonesia visa guide |
Free or fast e-visas and travel authorisations
These need an online application before you travel, but the approval is quick and, in two cases, free.
| Destination | Fee | Typical approval | Notes |
|---|---|---|---|
| Sri Lanka | Free (since 25 May 2026, for India and 39 other nationalities) | Usually within 24 hours | Despite "free", it is still an Electronic Travel Authorisation you must apply for at eta.gov.lk before flying, not visa-free entry. 30 days, double entry – see our Sri Lanka visa guide |
| Hong Kong | Free | Same day, usually | A Pre-arrival Registration (PAR), not a visa, gives 14 days – see our Hong Kong visa guide |
| Vietnam | USD 25 single entry, USD 50 multiple | About 3 working days | Up to 90 days, applied for at the official evisa.gov.vn – see our Vietnam visa guide |
| Cambodia | Reported at USD 30–36 (sources disagree; check evisa.gov.kh) | About 3 business days | 30 days, one extension of about 30 more days possible inside the country |
| Kenya | Reported at USD 30–51 (sources disagree; check etakenya.go.ke) | 1–3 business days typically | The eTA replaced Kenya's old visa in January 2024; apply for each traveller separately, infants included |
Many passport-validity and photo rules repeat across these applications – six months' validity and a recent, light-background photo come up again and again. If your passport is due for renewal, see our Indian passport renewal in Dubai guide before you start any of these.
Where your UAE residence visa does the work
This is the exception most general "visa-free countries" lists miss, because they are written for an Indian passport on its own. Hold a valid UAE residence visa or Emirates ID, and a short list of countries treats you differently from an Indian tourist flying in from Mumbai.
| Destination | What UAE residence gets you | Fee | Notes |
|---|---|---|---|
| Armenia | Visa-free, from 1 July 2026 to 1 July 2027 | None | Needs at least 6 months left on your UAE residence; up to 180 days a year. Reported to cover India, Pakistan, the Philippines and Egypt among 111 nationalities – confirm yours on Armenia's Foreign Ministry site. See our Armenia visa guide |
| Georgia | Visa-free, 90 days in any 180 | None | Your UAE residence visa or Emirates ID just needs to stay valid for the whole trip. See our Georgia visa guide |
| Azerbaijan | Visa on arrival at Baku's airports | Charged on arrival | Azerbaijan's own list of passports that get a visa on arrival does not include India – its embassy in Abu Dhabi says a valid UAE residence visa qualifies you anyway, whatever your nationality |
| Saudi Arabia | Tourist eVisa in your own right, any job | About SAR 480–535 (roughly AED 470–520) including insurance | UAE residence needs 3+ months left; 1-year multiple entry, covers Umrah, not Hajj. See our Saudi visa guide |
| Qatar | GCC Resident Visa (A2) via Hayya | QAR 100 | Passport and UAE residence each need 3+ months left; any job title, choose "Others" if yours is not listed. See our Qatar visa guide |
| Bahrain | eVisa or visa on arrival for GCC residents | From about BD 5 (2-week visa on arrival) | Eligibility also depends on nationality and job title; check evisa.gov.bh. See our Bahrain visa guide |
| Kuwait | Tourist visa on arrival, any job, since August 2025 | About KWD 10 plus a KWD 5 health-cover fee | 90 days; UAE residence and passport each need 6+ months left. See our Kuwait visa guide |
| Oman | GCC resident e-visa, if your job title is on Oman's approved list | OMR 5 | UAE residence needs 3+ months left. If your job is not on the list, the fallback is a 30-day tourist e-visa at OMR 20. See our Oman visa guide |
Outside this list, a UAE residence visa is not a substitute for your Indian passport's own status. Albania's embassy pages, for instance, do not support the claim – repeated on several travel sites – that UAE residence alone gets you in; and Montenegro's one UAE-residence route, a summer waiver for people with at least three years of continuous UAE residence flying in on a booked tour, ran only from 1 May to 1 October 2026 and had not been renewed as of 8 October 2026. If you are weighing the whole GCC-resident picture at once, our visa-free countries for UAE residents guide covers every nationality, not just Indian passports.
Where a US, UK or Schengen visa opens the door
A separate short list of countries looks past your Indian passport if you already hold a valid visa, or in some cases a residence permit, from the US, the UK or the Schengen area. None of these accept a UAE residence visa instead – that is the opposite pattern from the section above, and it is worth keeping the two apart.
| Destination | What qualifies | What it gets you | Notes |
|---|---|---|---|
| Turkey | A valid Schengen, US, UK or Irish visa or residence permit (used or unused, just valid on your entry date) | Eligibility for the e-Visa (USD 43, evisa.gov.tr) | Without one, Indian passport holders cannot use the e-Visa at all and must apply in person; AED 225 for a single-entry sticker visa through VFS Global in Dubai in 2026. A UAE residence visa does not qualify. See our Turkey visa guide |
| Mexico | A valid US, Canadian, UK, Japanese or Schengen visa, or a permanent resident card from one of those | Entry without a separate Mexican visa, up to 180 days | Mexico's own electronic authorisation (SAE) is not open to Indian passports as of October 2026, only Brazil, Russia, Turkey and Ukraine. Without a qualifying visa, apply at the Embassy of Mexico in Abu Dhabi. See our Mexico visa guide |
| Serbia | A valid Schengen, UK or US visa, or a residence permit from the Schengen area, the EU or the US | Visa-free entry, 90 days in any 180 | Otherwise apply online at welcometoserbia.gov.rs through the Serbian Embassy in Abu Dhabi. See our Serbia visa guide |
| Bosnia and Herzegovina | A valid multiple-entry Schengen or EU visa or residence permit, or a US visa | Visa-free entry, up to 30 days | Otherwise apply in person at the Embassy of Bosnia and Herzegovina in Abu Dhabi, around €60 (AED 238). See our Bosnia visa guide |
| Albania | A valid, already-used multiple-entry Schengen, US or UK visa, or a Schengen residence permit | Visa-free entry, 90 days in any 180 | The claim that a UAE residence permit alone works is widely repeated online; Albania's own embassy pages do not back it. See our Albania visa guide |
| Montenegro | A valid Schengen, US, UK or Irish visa or residence permit | Visa-free entry, up to 30 days | Separate from, and still open after, the UAE-resident summer waiver described above, which expired. See our Montenegro visa guide |

A few changes are worth knowing even if they do not change what you book next week. Iran suspended visa-free entry for ordinary Indian passport holders in November 2025, after reports of fraud and trafficking cases involving Indian nationals; it is no longer on anyone's current visa-free list for India. Bolivia moved from visa-on-arrival to a pre-approved e-visa for Indian travellers around the same time. On the other side, Sri Lanka's ETA became free for India on 25 May 2026, and Thailand's 30-day exemption, after a brief scare in May 2026 that would have replaced it with a paid 15-day visa on arrival, settled into law on 15 September 2026 after Thai tourism officials reported a steep drop in Indian bookings during the uncertainty.
Plan the trip, we handle the visas we can
Several of the destinations above – Vietnam, Thailand, Malaysia, Singapore, Indonesia, Kenya, Turkey, Saudi Arabia, Qatar, Oman, Kuwait, Bahrain, Azerbaijan, Armenia and Georgia – are among the 57 countries our visa services desk arranges, with prices from AED 130, depending on the country; each country's page shows its own starting price. A few places in this guide, including Mexico, Serbia, Bosnia and Herzegovina, Albania, Montenegro, Sri Lanka and Cambodia, are not currently on that list. For those, or if you are not sure which bucket your trip falls into, message us on WhatsApp at +971 4 589 0001 or use our contact page and we will tell you plainly whether we can arrange it. If your plan includes Georgia or Armenia, our Georgia package and National Day packages cover the trip itself, not just the visa question.
Frequently asked questions
How many countries can Indian passport holders visit without a visa?
The most recent Henley Passport Index (July 2026) gives India access to 55 or 56 destinations without a visa arranged in advance, ranking it around 80th globally; different outlets report slightly different counts because the index is updated through the year rather than in one release. The count mixes true visa-free entry with visa-on-arrival and free travel authorisations, so it is wider than just the "no paperwork at all" list in this guide.
Does my UAE residence visa let me skip a country's own visa?
Only in a specific set of places: Armenia and Georgia offer visa-free entry on a valid UAE residence visa, Azerbaijan gives a visa on arrival on the strength of it, and Saudi Arabia, Qatar, Bahrain, Kuwait and Oman each offer an easier visa route for GCC residents of any nationality. Outside that list, your Indian passport's own status is what counts, not your Emirates ID.
Is Malaysia still visa-free for Indians in 2026?
Yes, for stays of up to 30 days for tourism, but the exemption is time-limited to 31 December 2026 and has no confirmed extension beyond that date as of early October 2026. Check Malaysia's Immigration Department before booking travel close to or after the cut-off, and complete the free Malaysia Digital Arrival Card regardless.
Can a US, UK or Schengen visa get me into other countries without their own visa?
Yes, for a specific short list: it makes Indian passport holders eligible for Turkey's e-Visa, lets them skip a separate Mexican visa, and gives visa-free entry to Serbia, Bosnia and Herzegovina, Albania and Montenegro. A UAE residence visa does not work for any of these; only the Western visa or a qualifying residence permit does.
Do I still need an eTA or arrival card if a country is visa-free?
Often, yes. Thailand (Digital Arrival Card), Malaysia (MDAC), Indonesia and the Maldives (IMUGA) all require a free online form shortly before arrival even though no visa is needed. Sri Lanka and Hong Kong go further: both ask for an online Electronic Travel Authorisation or Pre-arrival Registration before you fly, even though neither charges a fee.
Which countries recently changed their rules for Indian passport holders?
Iran suspended visa-free entry for ordinary Indian passports in November 2025. Thailand cut its exemption from 60 to 30 days on 15 September 2026, after briefly considering a 15-day paid visa on arrival instead. Sri Lanka's ETA became free for India on 25 May 2026. Montenegro's UAE-resident summer waiver, a separate scheme from its regular visa rules, closed on 1 October 2026 with no renewal announced yet.
